06/22/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
06/22/16 19:08 Basic Star is a 10 year old spayed Chihuahua that is being surrender because her owner can’t care for her anymore and because she is breathing heavily but did not want assistance on find out what was wrong. The owner had gotten her as a gift and has had her since she was a month old. She has had no previous health issues or injuries except for the heavy breathing. The last she has been to the vet was back in 2013. Socialization The owner states that she can be shy with stranger at first but would be friendly and outgoing after she warms up. Star has been around children age from infants to 10 years old but she has never lived with any children. The owner states that she had minimum interaction with children but allowed being handled when the kids was around. When playing with adults and children she is very gentle. She spent some time with her neighbor’s dog but would play sometime and snap and each other time. She has previously lived with a cat and became territorial with the cat and bites the cats back leg. Behavior The owner states that she well behaved at home. Star would hide and scratch the owner to pick her up when there is a storm, fireworks or loud noise. When taking or touching her food bowl, water bowl, treats, and /or toys she is not bothered by it but will do a little grunt. The owners state that she is afraid when getting a bath or being brushed but would snap when trying to cut her nails. When someone unfamiliar approaches her home she would bark and sniff the person coming in but no sign of aggression. For the new family to know The owner described her to be friendly, affectionate, shy, mellow and fearful sometime. She was described to have a medium activity level and loved car rides. At home she would follow her owner everywhere. She loved the squeak toy that she had since she was a month old and never tried to destroy it. She was mostly kept indoors and was fed Purina with some warm water mixed in. She was also fed baked chicken but is current not eating it due to her diet. She was wee-wee pad trained but would use the grass when outside. She knows command like “sit”, “stay” and “come.” She loves sit on peoples laps. Intake During intake she was breathing heavily and did not want to move much. She allowed scanning (-), collaring, and having her photo taken. She eventually came up to me tapped at my leg and I picked her up. She just sat on my lap until she went to the back for her shots.

06/24/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Star lived with her previous owner for 10 years. She is noted to be shy with strangers initially, but friendly and outgoing once she warms up. She was tolerant of children when around them, though she did not live with any. She plays gently and appreciates sitting on her caretakers’ laps. The previous owner did note a few concerns: Star is described as possibly selective when playing with dogs (but would only escalate to snapping when she did not want to play) and was reported to sometimes bite at the leg of the cat with whom she lived. We are unclear as to whether this was aggression, overly exuberant play, or overstimulation. Star is also reported to snap when her nails are trimmed, so we recommend adopters prepared to safely manage this behavior to avoid pushing Star to escalate and to avoid any potential injury. In the care center, Star has been social and easy to handle. Her obesity does seem to be impacting her activity level, but in taking all known behaviors into consideration we feel Star is appropriate for an experienced adopter in a home without cats. Please note: a SAFER aggression assessment was not performed on Star in the care center. Please refer to her profile for additional details on the behaviors reported in her previous home.
