05/24/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
05/24/17 20:26 Basic Information: Stack is a two year old black and white male American Pitbull terrier. A volunteer writes: He might be ten pounds heavier than the last time I saw him, but those ears are unmistakable, and I knew who he was right away. Seeming to have a mind of their own, one headed north, the other going a bit southeast, it’s hard telling where they might end up! Stack’s ears are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to his charm. He is a low-rider, meatball, that can’t stand more than a few inches off the ground. His smile is magnetic and his personality is fun, playful and sweet! He seems very housetrained, always keeping a clean kennel, and his former owner tells us that he doesn’t mind grooming. He’s lived with older children and gets along well with pretty much everyone–even cats! Stack has excelled at doggy playgroup here at the center, and is even used as a social greeter dog. Stack has more charisma than you could hope for, but what he really needs is a home. Ask to meet him today!
05/26/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Full profile 5/24/17 Neutered, Owner surrender (Length in previous home) Previously lived with: Adults, children(ages 9-12 years old) and spent time with cats. Behavior toward strangers: Friendly and playful Behavior toward children: Friendly and outgoing Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Behavior toward cats: Respectful and tolerant. Resource guarding: Yes, he will growl when his food bowl is touched. Bite history: None reported Housetrained: No, he will use the bathroom indoors a few times a week. Energy level/descriptors: The owner stated Stack displays a medium activity level in the household. Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/26/17 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity:1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag:1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy1: No interest. Summary: Stack was friendly and social towards the assessor. PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Stack mostly displays neutral body language when interacting with male and female dogs. Stack’s previous owner did not provide any information on his behavior towards other dogs. The Behavior Department recommends that Stack be placed with resident dogs that match his calm sociability. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 5/24/17: Upon intake Stack was loose and wiggly, he allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/25/17: During his medical examination, Stack is friendly and playful, he allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: His previous owner reports a high activity level, which matches what we have seen in the care center.
IN SHELTER BEHAVIOR: 5/29/17 Stack appears to be escalating his guarding behavior, now anything in his kennel, this includes but is not limited to his toys, food, bed, water bowl, linen, and urine soaked items. During an interaction with a volunteer Stack grabbed at and quickly released her jacket after the volunteer had replaced his water and as she went to remove a piece of a towel that Stack had shredded earlier. Due to this increase in his guarding behavior, where he is guarding multiple items in his kennel, Stack is no longer an adoption room candidate due to safety concerns for both staff and volunteers. Placement should be sought as soon as possible. RECOMMENDATIONS: (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5)- Due to potential food guarding behavior. Stack gave an appropriate warning of his discomfort (growl) but we feel that young children may not know to respect this warning. Older, dog savvy children can be considered as long as the adults feel confident that Stack can be left alone while eating so he does not need to escalate from a growl. Behavior modification for food guarding behavior can be found at aspcapro.org. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding-Stack previous owner notes that he may growl when his food bowl is touched. We recommend that Stack be left alone while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Stack’s mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. He should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games.
05/25/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Stack mostly displays neutral body language when interacting with male and female dogs. He engages in a short burst of cooperative play where he attempts to mount, but explores the pen when he is unsuccessful. 5/26-5/27: Stack displays neutral body language and initially ignores a male dog. He keeps to himself as he explores, greeting the male once before continuing to explore. 5/30: Stack is utilized as a greeter dog and displays soft and social body language when greeting novel female dogs.
