06/25/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Described as “silly, playful and affectionate”, Stan had lived with his family all his life, which included young children of all ages and a cat with whom he wanted to play. We’re told that he allows the children to pet him, will lick their faces when they cry, and jump into the owner’s bed when he wants attention. When a new baby was born Stan became protective of the baby, not allowing anyone but mom near, so Stan had to now join us to find a new family to take care of. We’re also told that Sta is housetrained (check), playful with strangers, scared of lightning, and slept in bed with the kids. Stan and I became friends right away, and after showing off his housetraining skills, he also showed off lovely leash manners as we walked to the park. Stan sits as soon as he sees the treat in my hand, takes them gently, and holds his sit hoping more treats will come his way! Smart boy! Off leash, he came into my lap for some hugs and kisses and showed me what a super cuddler he can be. Gorgeous in his slate grey coat, Stan is a proven family dog who is missing having a family right now. Let’s find him a new family to cuddle with, a second chance at a family life. Come meet him today. This video was taken when his name was still Sta, before being changed to Stan:
06/20/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Stan came into our center as an owner surrender citing becoming overprotective of the family’s new baby, has growled/lunged/bitten family members if the baby cries and anyone but the mother attempts to soothe the baby. It is reported Stan has lived with children between the ages of newborn infant to 9 years old. Owner reports Stan sniffs and licks the newborn’s face, allows 3 year old to pet and ride his back, licking the children’s faces when they cry. Stan also reportedly lived with a cat, constantly attempts to solicit play with the cat. It is reported Stan is not bothered if anyone touches his Food, Toys, Treats. Stan is reportedly housebroken. He is described as silly, playful, and affectionate. Stan pulled lightly on leash for his relief walk. He was friendly and sociable upon entering SAFER assessment room. Stan allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, tail wag. He stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, body soft. Stan was distracted and unresponsive during Tag game, focused on other stimuli. He did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts. Sta showed minimal interest in Toy, though this may be due to environment as owner reports he enjoys playing with sock monkeys and rubber balls. When off leash with other dogs, Stan is initially nervous and shies away from interaction. Eventually he shows more interest in approaching and sniffing. The Behavior Team feels Stan would do best with an Experienced adopter. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, mouth closed, ears back Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed Toy: 1. 06/19/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Stan was initially nervous when interacting with dogs but over time he has become more comfortable. He typically now is sexually motivated but is begining to respond well to correction. With a more playful female he may engage briefly in play. He has never lived with another dog, but his previous owner notes “when he notices other dogs outside he will whimper and attempt to get near them.” The behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction as well as allwoing Stan time to acclimate to his new environement before introducing him to any resident dogs. 6/19:When off leash with other dogs, Stan is initially nervous and shies away from interaction.
