Spyro

Hello, my name is Spyro. My animal id is #15370. I am a desexed male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 04-Dec-2017, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving – no pets allowed.

Spyro is at risk for behavioral reasons. Spyro was surrendered to the shelter due to a bite incident, which occurred when the owner went to seperate him from another dog, and he was also reported to be anxious around children. In the shleter, we have found that if approached correctly, Spyro can be sociable, however, Spyro’s behavior is deteriorating in the shelter. Medically, we have no concerns for Spyro, who is a healthy dog.

My medical notes are…

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: Spyro has shown social and attention seeking behaviors towards handlers he is familiar with (i.e. jumping on their lap with his mouth open and eyes soft, while accepting petting). He has also shown food-motivated behaviors, and has responded to cues such as “sit” and “paw” in exchange for treats.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY

Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to Spyro’s previous owner reporting that he is anxious around children and hides from them, we recommend an adult only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Spyro’s bite history, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Spyro is reported to be shy with new people, which we have seen at the care center. He takes several minutes to warm up to new people, barking at them at first. It is important to always go slow and give Spyro the option to walk away from any social interaction. Spyro should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Spyro’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Spyro would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
