11/25/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I believe in love at first sight, and that’s how it was with me and Spike. What a great dog! Quietly waiting in his kennel, his soft face and expressive eyes were all it took…he’s gorgeous with a capital GORGEOUS with a sweet, gentle personality to match. His leash manners are great, he quickly takes care of his business the moment we’re out the door, and we enjoy an easy walk to the park. Spike’s tail never stops wagging, he seems to like dogs of all sizes, he sits for pictures and softly enjoys some treats. Off leash in a pen, he gently plays with a toy, greets a Chihuahua through the fence with a soft tail and appropriate body language, and gives me some nibbly kisses. Spike’s back legs seem a bit stiff, but nothing is going to stop this boy from love, from play, and from more love. His face says it all: ‘I’m ready to love you to the moon and back, so come meet me today.’ Another volunteer writes: It’s impossible not to fall in love with this sweet boy. So happy to meet new people, rolling over for a belly rub, giving nibbly kisses, and posing for photos, he’s simply the best! His back legs seem a bit stiff, but nothing slows him down, and the only nod he gives to the issue is a side-saddle sit which is as cute as can be anyway. He head tilts to kissy noises, watches other dogs come and go with easy interest, and in play groups, romps gently with both males and females. Spike has my heart as well as that of staff who keep telling me how much they love him. Now it’s your turn — show him the love and make him yours. What a great gift to yourself.
11/22/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Altered, Stray Other notes: upon intake Spike appeared to have a lot of energy and jumped around. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 11/22/16 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity:2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, panting, jumps up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game. He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Squeeze 2: 3. Dog mouths the Assessor’s hand with moderate pressure. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Spike displayed high energy and movement and was very mouthy with the assessor during his assessment. He may require positive reinforcement training to learn basic manners and can benefit from chew toys and puzzle toys such as kongs to give him an outlet for his mouthiness as well as for mental exercise. PLAYGROUP: When off leash with male and female dogs, Spike is a bit sexually motivated but will engage in play once solicited. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 11/22/16 During his initial medical examination, Spike appeared tense though allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience _X_No young children (under 5) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control (It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended.) _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition (Decreasing the force of the mouth as well as the frequency of mouthing, in this order is recommended by using force-free, reward based training as well to reinforce a soft appropriate mouth and redirect hard inappropriate mouthing onto toys.)
11/22/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
11/22: When off leash with male and female dogs, Spike is a bit sexually motivated but will engage in play once solicited. 11/23: Spike continues to engage in play with male and female dogs but does not wrestle, rather he will follow along side while the other dogs are playing.
