02/09/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Hey guys, where’s the party at? Spike got your popcorn right here! Well, it’s more like MY popcorn, but when I do occasionally drop it you’re welcome to pick it up and hold it for a little while… okay, I said a LITTLE while, please give it back now. Please please please please please? I’m gonna be frank with you, I’m feeling pretty lonely and confused at the moment and chewing on my popcorn makes me feel better. Like a LOT better. See how my butt goes up and my tail wags? Since parting ways with my family it’s been hard adjusting to the bachelor lifestyle and I really really miss them. Back home I had kids to play with, adults to fuss over me and a kitty friend for four-legged company and there was always someone around to share a game of fetch or appreciate my kisses. You’ll understand if maybe I get a little overexcited as you pass my kennel? It’s only because I want to get out and explore and play and actually feel as if I belong to someone again. I walk pretty well on leash and I’m great at ‘holding it’ until we get into the street but once business is concluded I like to turn around and head right back inside. I get that it might seem a bit weird compared to other dogs but that’s just the way I was trained, y’know? Treats are good, fetch is fun and sniffing everything is cool but what I love most are chew toys–the squishier, the better! For nine years I had my freedom and my family and those are hard things to lose but Spike’s trying real hard to keep his spirits up. When I get to explore the yard or play with other dogs or my volunteer friend offers me treats and plenty of petting, I feel like maybe everything is going to be alright after all. I sure hope so. They say I need an adopter to find me before I can go home so I’m gonna keep on performing my signature welcome song until they get here…but…hey…wait a minute… could it be true? Are YOU my adopter?
02/06/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Spike pulls a bit on the leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Spike was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Spike took the toy away, body language was stiff. Spike was surrender to us. His previous owner described him as friendly and playful with a medium activity level. Around strangers Spike is friendly. Spike has lived with 3 children between the ages of 3 and 16 year old, t he is relaxed and playful around the children. Spike has lived with a 2 year old cat; Spike gets along with the cat but can play too rough at times. The owner stats that Spike is not bothered when some moves his food or treats while he is eating. However when someone takes his toys away he will growl at the person”. Due to the behavior demonstrated during the assessment and his owner profile the behavior department feels that Spike would do better in an experienced home without children. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 3. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is stiff.
02/06/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs Spike is sexually motivated, becoming frustrated (vocalizes and growls) when the helper dog solicits running play and he is unable to mount. He did not live in a home with other dogs but was allowed to play off the leash in the dog park. His owner reports that there “he wanders off some to explore the surrounding area but comes back when called when off the leash.” Based on the observations seen in the care center, the behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction to ensure both Spike and the resident dog are compatible and comfortable with each other.
