Spike’s the charismatic, super-athlete of MACC right now. A die hard ball player, he could easily star in his own movie. Life’s a game to this big boy, a game he plays with infinite devotion. He politely follows the rules for each new venture though, he wants to have fun and he wants you to have fun. And you do, watching him leap and twirl in the air, skipping along, dancing on tip toes, stuffing his face with tennis balls like a chipmunk, coming back to you every time with a silly lolling grin on his face. His focus abates slightly to greet other dogs, which he does like a gentlemen. When we take a half-time break he strolls back to his kennel, trotting gently along by my side, it’s only when we enter the shelter I realize he snuck a couple balls in his mouth. We pass by his grandmother of sorts, Stinkie A1065664, and he pauses, and she leaps to the front of the cage a little whine from each of them, it’s obvious they recognize each-other, one moment each part of a large rambunctious family, the next here. Spike has taken the shift quite well though, and this stunning movie star awaits your visit at Manhattan Care Center (just remember to bring ball), then let the game begin!

02/20/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
02/20/16 16:14HRS Spike is described as energetic, affectionate and playful. He lived in a home with children aged 1 month to 4 years old. He will allow the children to pet him all over and even try to ride him. Spike has lived with a female dog named Stinkie and they are tolerant and playful with each other. They will groom each other, play together and sleep alongside each other. When Spike notices another dog outside, he doesn’t pay any attention to it unless the other dog is barking at him. He will repeatedly bark at the dog while attempting to approach the dog. BEHAVIOR Spike will follow his owner around the home all day. He enjoys being petted. He is bathed 2x a month and will attempt to escape while being bathed. He isn’t bothered by having his food touched or approached while he is eating. Spike will jump up and attempt to play with visitors that enter the home. If he is unfamiliar and uncomfortable with someone that enters the home, he will growl and bark at them. Spike becomes excited and will attempt to jump up on strangers that approach his owner while being walked. FOR A NEW FAMILY TO KNOW Spike knows the commands “left paw, right paw, sit, and come here.” Spike enjoys playing with balls, empty plastic bottles. Spike is accustomed to playing with his toys outside because he becomes too excited in the home with the small children and will jump up on them. He is accustomed to being walked on leash 3x a day. Spike is allergic to yeast and eats grain free dry dog food. He sleeps on his cushion in the hallway of the home alongside Stinkie. DURING INTAKE Spike was very energetic, walking around the office and jumping up on the Admissions Counselor while wagging his tail. He allowed petting all over and became easily excited when given attention. He was collared, scanned for a microchip(positive) and photographed.

A volunteer writes: “Carpe Diem” is the powerful moto that feeds Spike’s spirit … Lay your eyes on him and he will be all yours…. Be ready for the ride… Spike is an energetic boy who sometimes gets some silly thoughts, some craves like pregnant ladies can have. A big one is Spike’s affinity for cones. His eyes almost come out of their sockets..He must have them and “cherish” them… He was a big player in his former home, balls, empty plastic bottles got him all excited and I guess , he took that with him. He loves balls and will jump and run for hours catching one ball after the other, not guarding them even though I saw him storing three of them in his big mouth. Although thrilled by toys, Spike will sit and wait for them …He can indeed give paw, only the left for me… Spike is an almost middle aged gentleman, well built, healthy, well groomed and smartly dressed in a cinnamon and vanilla coat that announces his tender side…Yep, he likes to be petted and even kissed after a good ball game. Spike does pull on the leash, seems very much house trained and is quite “proper” when he meets other dogs. He is cool in playgroups with his peers. Spike, adopted as a very young boy from the Manhattan Care Center came to us with 12 year old Stinkie, his beloved housemate as their owners lost their home. Like Stinkie, he has been beautifully cared for. He comes with excellent comments that nevertheless stress his strength. Spike is a big boy, quite enthusiastic, strong, playful and friendly. He performed quite well on his behavioral evaluation, lived with kids, another dog and could make quite a nice companion once he will be out of his tight space, cared for and loved. Older children would probably be best (if any) seen Spike is quite energetic. Come and meet Spike at the Manhattan Care Center. His wildest dream is…to belong to you…
02/23/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Spike pulls a bit on the leash. He was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up. Spike was overexcited during handling, jumping up, and was hard to position, but showed no aggression. He was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Spike was not interested in toys. Spike was surrender to us. His previous owner described him as energetic, affectionate and playful. He lived in a home with children aged 1 month to 4 years old. He will allow the children to pet him all over and even try to ride him. Spike has lived with a female dog named Stinkie A1065664and they are tolerant and playful with each other. They will groom each other, play together and sleep alongside each other. When Spike notices another dog outside, he doesn’t pay any attention to it unless the other dog is barking at him. He will repeatedly bark at the dog while attempting to approach the dog. He isn’t bothered by having his food touched or approached while he is eating. Spike will jump up and attempt to play with visitors that enter the home. Spike becomes excited and will attempt to jump up on strangers that approach his owner while being walked”. Spike appears to be a high-energy dog that will likely do best with an adopter prepared to provide mental and physical stimulation and appropriate outlets for his energy. The behavior department feels that he can go to an experienced home. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) She is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1. No interest. 3/2 update: Spike has become increasingly more distressed during his stay at the care center. He persistently barks in the kennel, on walks and in the yard. He is anxious outside, barking and seeking exit from the yard. Due to his increased stress level, he should leave the care center as soon as possible.
02/24/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Spike has offered brief greeting to other dogs, but has quickly become distracted, and even anxious. He arrived into our care with another dog (a female), and the previous owner cites that “Spike has lived with a female dog named Stinkie and they are tolerant and playful with each other”. Based on the behaviors observed on Spike while in our care, the behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction, and that he be allowed time to acclimate into a new environment before introducing him to any resident dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Spike greets and sniffs the helper dog, a bit tense bodied. 2/25 update: Spike greets politely, neutral body, then roams the yard. 3/2 update: Spike briefly greets but remains anxious in the yard.
