Spellman
Hello, my name is Spellman. My animal id is #10403. I am a male tan dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 21-Oct-2017.
Spellman 10403 is at risk for behavior challenges (New Hope Only determination). He has been highly fearful and has allowed minimal handling in the care center. When approached in the kennel he lunges and snaps at the leash, and we have been unable to place him into playgroup or perform a handling assessment as a result of this behavior. We recommend placement into an adult-only home through a New Hope partner. Medically, Spellman has a small dermal mass on his left leg.
My medical notes are…

Summary:: Spellman is difficult to remove from the kennel, lunging and snapping at the leash. He appears to be uncomfortable or afraid of the slip lead. He has also allowed minimal handling from his caretakers. Out of concern for his stress levels and his response to restraint, we feel Spellman is not a great candidate for a handling assessment at this time. Please see his owner surrender profile for a full summary of his behavior in his previous home.
Summary (1):: Spellman came into the Care Center as a stray so his previous behavior around other dogs is unknown. 10/22: The behavior team is unable to safely remove Spellman from his kennel, so he is not introduced to a dog today.
Date of intake:: 10/21/2017
Summary:: Timid, allowed handling but tense during collaring.
Date of initial:: 10/22/2017
Summary:: Tense, nervous, whale eyed, growled but allowed examination and procedures without escalating.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: New Hope: Spellman has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Spellman has attempted to bite during her stay in our care centers when uncomfortable; guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Spellman to new and unfamiliar situations.
