05/29/2017 AT RISK MEMO
Spartacus A1108179 is at risk for a New Hope Only behavior determination and for CIRDC. He has shown a very low threshold for arousal; when handled he mounts incessantly, holds on tightly, and is difficult to remove or distract. Due to this behavior, it has been difficult to get a good read on Spartacus’s behavioral repertoire aside from the social hyper-arousal.

During tag he mounted the assessor’s leg and would not stop. He had to be physically removed and the rest of the handling assessment was unable to be conducted. PLAYGROUP: When off leash with another dog, Spartacus will engage in exuberant play with the intent to mount. He cease this behavior when corrected by the other dog. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Spartacus and other social or playful dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: 5/26/17 During intake, Spartacus was calm and relaxed. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/26/17 During his initial medical exam, Spartacus was tense and growled. ENERGY LEVEL: In the care center, Spartacus has been active and enthusiastic. He may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. He will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No young children (under 5): Due to his low threshold for arousal, we recommend an adult only home at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Spartacus has displayed a low threshold for arousal at the care center, mounting incessantly when he becomes excited. The behavior department recommends Spartacus be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Spartacus to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Spartacus presents with outside of the care centers. Potential challenges: _X_Social hyper-arousal: Spartacus has displayed low threshold for arousal, rapidly escalating and incessantly mounting people. Immediate intervention and consultation with a qualified veterinary behaviorist/professional trainer is strongly recommended to aid in addressing this issue to prevent further behavioral concerns that may appear in the future if not treated right away. We recommend only force-free, reward based training when introducing or exposing Spartacus to new and unfamiliar situations.
