06/27/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Sparrow is a soccer mom…her serious face lit up when she saw the tennis balls. Now we are talking. She was like a kid in a playground. Sparrow is a tiny powerful machine. She runs quite fast, jumps in the air, gives head shots and catches often the ball. She prefers the “noisy” ones that add pleasure to the game. I would not think that Sparrow shares her toys at this point, but I guess she can be taught. Sparrow is a good walker, pulls slightly on the leash and does her business on the way. We met a little dog, a puppy and a dog her size, quite up close and Sparrow was fine with them. She is a very pretty medium sized young female, all dressed in cream and gold. She is friendly and sociable, comes on the bench and the lap upon request, and very clearly enjoys being hugged. Sparrow seems to have been recently separated from her litter, an event that can be quite stressful for a mom. Sparrow needs time to adjust to her “single’ status and to ready herself for a new life as a beloved and cherished pet and forever best friend. Sparrow is at the Manhattan Care Center, dreaming of soft pillows, treats, long walks, ball games and mostly, the love of a human.
06/27/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 6/25/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 6/27/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Toy: 5. Dog bites. Summary: Sparrow was social during her assessment and allowed all handling. She bit the hand when it touched the toy she was in possession of. PLAYGROUP: Sparrow has not been completely comfortable during interacting with dogs in the care center, though has begun to show brief interest in approaching to sniff calm dogs. The behavior department recommends that future introductions be conducted at a supervised, slow pace to respectful dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Sparrow allowed handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 6/25/17 During her initial medical exam, Sparrow was tense but allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Sparrow so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to the level of possession guarding seen in the care center, we recommend an adult only home. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to biting the hand when she was in possession of a toy on her assessment, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Sparrow to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Sparrow presents with outside of the care centers. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding: Sparrow has growled at people when in possession of toys at the care center, and bit the hand when it touched the toy during her assessment. For this reason we advise against ever removing items from Sparrow’s possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment.
06/25/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Sparrow has not been completely comfortable during interacting with dogs in the care center, though has begun to show brief interest in approaching to sniff calm dogs. She has most recently displayed concern when a greeting was conducted to a female dog, stiffening, growling, and snapping. The behavior department recommends that future introductions be conducted at a supervised, slow pace to respectful male dogs. 6/25: When introduced to the helper dog through a barrier, Sparrow is initially anxious, distracted. She hard barks and offers a brief growl when greeting is prolonged. 6/26: Sparrow displays more neutral body language, brief wag when greeting. When off leash, Sparrow approaches and sniffs, body a bit cautious. 6/27: Sparrow approaches and sniffs a calm male dog. She becomes a bit uncomfortable with lingering face to face greeting, and moves away. 6/28: Sparrow greets politely, then roams away. 6/29: Sparrow greets a calm male dog politely. When greeting a female, Sparrow stiffens, growls and snaps.
