04/30/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
04/30/17 16:53 Basic Info: Sparky A110529 is a 3yr old tan &white neutered male AMPBT who was given to the owner two months ago from the previous owner & is being surrendered along with his sister Cinnamon A1110530 due to no time. Their last vet visit is unknown but currently both have no known healh issues/injuries. Socialization: Sparky is friendly/outgoing with strangers. He’s spent time with children from the building that loved both him & Cinnamon. Sparky was gentle, exuberant, relaxed/playful & respectful of the adults, Cinnamon & the kids that would visit (the younger ones would ride them). When Sparky spots a dog on the street he’ll bark at them the owner believes to play. Sparky has never bitten/scratched any person or animal. Behavior: Sparky isn’t bothered by the following: having his food/food bowl, toys/treats touched/moved or being moved off of furniture. He hasn’t been disturbed while sleeping/resting, been bathed or had his nails trimmed. If someone unfamiliar approaches the home/family member Sparky will bark then jump up on them to greet them. For A New Family to Know: Sparky is described as very friendly, very affectionate, playful, confident & excitable with a medium-high activity level. The owner likes everything about Sparky especially his “hyena laugh” and Sparky enjoys being pet & playing. When the owner is home Sparky follows them around. He enjoys ball, squeaky, stuffed, rope toys & games of tug & chase. Sparky sleeps on a dog bed, eats Pedigree dry dog food 2-3x a day, uses wee wee pads however does have accidents outside the wee wee pad every so often. Sparky is an indoor only dog that is left loose in the apartment & is well behaved (except for the past month he & Cinnamon have been in a room due to the owner being out of town and the person caring for them didn’t want them loose in the apartment). Sparky’s known commands are “sit” & “come”. Intake Behavior: Sparky had a super loose, wiggly body & allowed all handling. He allowed to be scanned (+), collared & taken pictures of. Sparky will jump up to give hugs & kisses. Sparky does not like going into his kennel & will put up quite a struggle to avoid being put in one. After several minutes of trying to get him in he was tired & stopped attempting to run out. All the while Sparky gave kisses & allowed all handling.
05/02/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Surrendered with his sister Cinnamon (A1110530) by their short time owner due to “no time”, Sparky is as well groomed and handsome as his sister is beautiful. Happy to make new friends and be out for a walk, after going potty he’s happy to settle into a convenient lap for lots of hugs and kisses. It’s his specialty, and he does it well! His tail wag is big circles of joy at the connection, his tongue a big washcloth, and with his paws on your shoulders there is nothing better than time with Sparky! We’re told the kids in the building where he lived before loved both of them, and the younger kids would ride them (not recommended), doesn’t guard his things, loves playing with toys, sleeps on his dog bed, is well behaved when left home alone, and knows how to use wee wee pads. Sparky pulls on the leash a bit at his happiness at being out for a walk, wags his tail as he walks (it never stops wagging, ever), ignores other dogs we pass in the park, and is just a big baby. Passing his sister in her kennel on the way back to his, he stopped and they kissed through the gate. Awwwww. Our handsome Don Juan, I mean Sparky, is looking for a new family with whom to cuddle. Come meet him today.

Summary: Sparky was social throughout his assessment and jumped into the assessor’s lap, apparently seeking comfort. He did seem anxious in the assessment room and whined whenever he was not being pet. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Tolerant: These dogs are typically non-reactive on leash and will be either friendly or indifferent off leash. They can typically tolerate some rude behavior from other dogs and can be described as having a long fuse. They show relaxed, appropriate, easy-going body language around others. PLAYGROUP: Sparky is polite and tolerant when interacting with other dogs. He has displayed brief interest in soft play. The previous owner cites “Gentle, exuberant, relaxed, playful, and respectful of the dog he lived with.” The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Sparky and respectful resident dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 4/30/17 During his initial medical exam, Sparky was social and allowed handling.
ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Sparky so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_Anxiety: Sparky has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining) and panting through the SAFER. We cannot be certain whether similar behavior will be seen in a future home environment. Positive reinforcement, reward based training is advised to deal with this issue should it arise in the home. Giving Sparky alternative things to do, such as Kongs and puzzle toys, is recommended. He should be given time to acclimate to her new home.
