A volunteer writes:

Sparky had it really rough lately… His owner died and although he was lucky  enough to have been rescued by a relative, that person had to surrender him as he is very visually impaired and may be diabetic… Sparky is described as a sweet, friendly and sociable little guy who was good with the young kids in the house, welcoming of strangers, fine with dogs met(may be sniffed) in the park and free of any handling issues. He would not be destructive  and did his business outside and on wee wee pads. The short time master was right on the dot…The description fits the Sparky we have here at the care center. A friendly guy who likes company and enjoys very much his walks. He takes his cues from his caretaker to  smartly avoid obstacles. He is an excellent arm and lap dog and takes treats gently from my hand.  Sparky is rather cute and silky. He has the most adorable square face, spongy  black nose and large cloudy button eyes. Sparky comes with a disability and possibly medical issues. He needs a very special person to care for him and love him. He is all worth it, a very good little dog, still full of spunk and love for humans. Sparky is at the Manhattan Care Center. Come and meet him soon.
PROFILE :

Basic Information

Sparky is a 10 year old male terrier mix who is being surrendered due to his medical conditions. Surrendering party stated he is blind and has diabetes. She took him to a vet last month.

Socialization

Sparky is friendly around strangers. He has lived with kid’s ages 2, 5, and 9 and was playful, respectful, and tolerant of them. He plays in a gentle manner with everyone. He did not live with any kind of animal. When taken to a dog park he would tolerate, respect, and be playful with all kinds of dogs. He would play in a gentle manner with them.

Behavior

Sparky has no behavior issues. He is not bothered by loud or sudden noises like storms/fireworks. He is not bothered if his food is touched while eating, if a treat of any kind or toy is taken away, if pushed off furniture, if held, if disturbed while sleeping, if bathed, if brushed, nails trimmed, of if someone unfamiliar approaches owner or family member. Sparky will bark if someone knocks on the door.

For a New Family to Know

Sparky is described as friendly, affectionate, and mellow with a low to medium activity level. He will follow owner around when home. He likes to play with stiffed toys. He is kept indoors only and eats a mixture of wet and dry food. He is fed a small bowl twice a day. He is house trained, but will use a wee-wee pad when home. He is well behaved when left home alone. He has never been left in a yard or crated. He knows commands like sit, stay, come, and down. He likes to go on long walks and does not pull when walked on a leash. If walked off a leash he will stay by owner’s side.

Behavior during Intake

Sparky tolerated all handling during intake. I was able to pick him up for his picture without any hesitation from him. No signs of aggression were displayed during intake.
