05/18/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Sparky came to us as an owner surrender due to the owner moving and is now unable to have pets. According to the owner Sparky is friendly with strangers, has spent time with children and is playful but somewhat rough when playing. The owner stated that Sparky doesn’t like water and will growl or snap at someone if bathed. Upon intake it was observed that Sparky seemed very reactive to a small dog that was in the lobby and would growl when seeing the dog. He and the owner were taken outside where the owner placed a muzzle on Sparky. Two handlers went to retrieve Sparky where he could be seen growling and lunging toward them. As the handlers approached and put a slip lead on him Sparky fought his way out of the muzzle and immediately began to bite at the slip lead. Another was but on to control him when Sparky began to crocodile roll. After a few minutes Sparky was able to be muzzled again and taken to medical. In the kennel Sparky can be seen with very fearful and trembling body language near the back of the cage. When attempting to remove Sparky from his kennel he bared his teeth at the handler, growled and snapped at the leash. Due to the behavior displayed Sparky will not receive a SAFER for stress levels and safety concerns. We recommend Sparky go to a New Hope partner that can provide the proper behavior modification Sparky needs. An attempt was made to remove Sparky from his kennel but due to his fearfulness he will be given another day to acclimate. 5/17: Another attempt was made to remove him from his kennel but due to his reactivity he could not be brought to play group at this time.
