A volunteer writes:

I saw Sparky and his volunteer coming all perky from a walk in the park. “He is such a great guy, such energy and so good at meeting other dogs, house trained too, climbs stairs and hops on benches…” Pretty good for an elderly pooch of fifteen who was surrendered into our care as  his family is moving to a place not allowing dogs. Sparky is an Animal Care center Alumnus and was owned for eleven years !!! He lived happily with young children , even a cat and comes with excellent recommendations. He is well behaved and welcoming in his kennel, accepts the leash without hesitation and walks nicely, sometimes shaking one of his hinds when he idles . He likes caresses and the lap and we are told that he is quite playful. Our Sparky might be 15 but he is quite lively, inter-active, friendly and healthy beside ailing teeth. He is an oldie but a goodie who still can bring love and fun into a new owner’s life. Come and meet him soon at the Manhattan Care Center. Sparky so wants to be yours..

Profile:

Basic Information

Sparky is a 15 year old neutered Papillon mix that is being surrendered because owner is moving and cannot take him with her. Sparky was adopted from ACC about 11 years ago. Owner stated Sparky’s legs shake sometimes. He last saw a vet about three years ago.

Socialization

Sparky is friendly around strangers. He lived with kid’s ages 3 and 8. He was playful and tolerant of the kids. He plays in a gentle manner with kids as well as adults. He has never lived or been around other dogs. He lived with an older cat. He was relaxed and respectful of the cat. He has never bitten a person or animal.

Behavior

Owner stated Sparky has no behavior issues and he is not bothered by loud or sudden noises. He is not bothered if his food is touched while he is eating, if a treat of any kind is taken away, if a toy is taken away, if pushed off furniture, if held, if disturbed while sleeping, if bathed, if brushed, or if someone unfamiliar approaches owner or a family member. He will bark if someone knocks on the door. Owner has never trimmed his nails.

For a New Family to Know

Sparky is described as friendly, affectionate, and playful with a medium activity level. He likes to stay in the same room when home. He likes to play with balls and bones. He likes to play fetch. He is kept indoors only and sleeps under owner’s bed. He was fed a mixture of wet and dry food, brand name Alpo. Owner fed him twice a day. Sparky is house-trained and will got potty on dirt. He is well behaved when left home alone. He has never been left in a yard or crate trained. He knows the command sit. Owner takes him on three walks per day for exercise. He sometimes pulls lightly on a leash and when walked off the leash he will wander but comes back.

Behavior during Intake

Sparky tolerated all handling during intake. He tolerated me picking him up and placing him on our counter for his photo. He did not show any signs of aggression during intake.

Behavior:

Sparky walks calmly on leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body.  He was calm and relaxed during handling. Sparky had a low body position during the tag test, but followed the assessor at the end of the leash. He was not interested in toys.

Sparky was surrender to us. According to his previous owner Sparky is friendly around strangers. He lived with children, ages three and eight; he is playful/tolerant of children and adults alike. He has never lived or been around other dogs though has lived with a cat who he was respectful of. He is not bothered if his food, treat or toy is touched. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.

Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.

Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.
