07/15/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Uniquely handsome with one blue eye and one hazel, Sparks wears a lush well groomed coat, is the perfect weight for his size, and is seriously awesome looking. His fun but low key personality complements his good looks, and after a short walk (he pulls on the leash) to go potty we head into the backyard to play. Sparks found a toy on the bench, took it in his mouth and that was it – he carried it around the pen like his prize possession, brought it onto my lap inviting me to play tug, did laps again with the toy in his mouth, and then lay down with it to rest. Too cute! Sparks was surrendered to our care along with his housemate Coco (A1068313) due to personal reasons. We’re told he lived with 2 adults and 1 young child, gets along with strangers, is active and goofy and protective of his family, needs to warm up to big dogs but got along well with the puppy in the home, loves to play, knows ‘sit’ (check), is crate trained and housetrained (check). We’re also told that Sparks is uncomfortable with people arguing loudly and will try to separate them. I had a great time with Sparks, he’s fun and friendly, I loved our game of tug (I let him win but don’t tell him that!) and love that he brings it onto my lap in invitation. If a handsome, friendly, playful active dog is the perfect complement to your family please come meet our boy today.
07/19/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Sparks pulls hard on the leash. He showed a low threshold for what appears to be sexual arousal and consistently tried to mount the Assessor. Sparks was overexcited during handling, jumping up, mounts the assessor and was hard to position, but showed no aggression. He was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Sparks was not interested in toys. Sparks is an active dog he need a significant amount of exercise and mental stimulation. The behavior department feels that he can go to an experience home. We also recommend a home without young children; older children can be considered pending interaction. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. No interest.
05/05/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Sparks in as a stray so his past behavior with other dogs is unknown. When off leash here at the Care Center, Sparks greets with energetic wiggles and play bows. Once inside the pen he becomes sexually motivated; licking the other dogs genitals and is persistent after handler’s interrupt. 7/14: Manhattan Care Center: Sparks stiffens and growls when allowed to linger at the gate. When inside the pen, he is highly sexually motivaed. He becomes increasingly aroused when the other dog begins ti run off. He does not slow when corrected by he helper. 7/15 update: Sparks is immediately taken into the pen, so as not to have a prolonged interaction and potential reactivity. He is sexually motivated and will continue to attempt to mount once corrected.
