01/12/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Indeed, Sparks does… spark in the winter sun. He reminds me of a black panther when he lays on the ground, all shiny and black, his piercing amber eyes looking right at the camera. He is quite a masterpiece! Sparks was found as a stray but looks like a very well cared for dog, healthy and the perfect weight. He is welcoming in his kennel, does not question my leash and walks at a good pace, markings slightly his territory. The pigeons are of no interest to him. He barks on and off at other dogs met, usually not at females. Sparks is a big dog and to find himself in a kennel might be unsettling. He is a little tense and aloof but receives well my caresses. He sits on command and even accepts a scarf around his neck. He does not care much for my treats. He often stands on his hinds , leaning on the gate and scanning the premises. Right now, Sparks looks like a majestic and mysterious dog to me. I need to see a little bit more of him to understand him and I am looking forward to meeting him again. A volunteer adds: I saw another side of Sparks today…. Although calm and well behaved in his kennel, he is one playful dog outside, free in a pen. What a great retriever he is ! He knows not to guard his ball or the game would be over. I am in awe looking at him, laying on the ground, wrapped in the thickest and most perfect jet black coat. He is absolutely magnificent! He has opened up so much, too, and comes to rest his head on my chest for caresses and hugs. Sparks is a masterpiece, a pleasure for the eyes but also a friendly, playful and sociable gent who will make an awesome companion. A volunteer adds: Every day, I discover another side of Sparks…Last night, it was his soft side…After our walk and usual ball game, he transformed into the greatest lap dog, indulging himself in hugs and kisses. I was so glad to have unearthed another of his treasures…. I would never have thought..See what you are missing…….

01/07/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Sparks greets other dogs well but is not initially comfortable interacting. During his stay at the care center he has opened up more and approached the other dogs while maintaining a more relaxed body posture. He came into the care center as a stray so his in-home behaviors with other dogs are unknown. Based on these observations the behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction as well as giving Sparks time to acclimate to his new environment before being introduced to a resident dog. When off leash with other dogs, Sparks initially offers polite greeting. Sparks wanders off to seek handler attention. When re-approached, he stiffens and attempts to avoid. 1/9 update: Sparks greets well at the gate but once introduced he only sniffs briefly before walking away. When the helper dog attempts to interact with him he becomes stiff and uncomfortable, waiting for the other dog to move away before he moves. 1/12 update: Sparks continues to offer brief greeting. He quickly is distracted by other stimuli in the yard.
