02/06/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
02/06/16 13:38 Basic Info: Soy is a 5 year old, pit bull/lab mix. She is unaltered. Her former owner got her from a friend when she was just 2 months old. He can no longer keep her becaue he had to move to a smaller space and no longer has room for the dog. It is not clear when Soy was last seen by a vet. Socialization: Around strangers Soy is generally friendly. It may take her a few minutes to get comfortable. She can be kind of on the nervous side but she is eager to warm up to people and animals that want to love her. Soy is a very gentle dog. She loves all the people that love her. She is amazing with kids ages 3 and up. Soy is alway friendly with the dogs in the area but she hasn’t spend a lot of time with dogs. She has never spent any time with cats. Behavior history: Soy has never bitten a dog, cat or another person. She is really well trained to go to the bathroom outside but she will go inside if she isn’t taken out all day. During fireworks Soy will shake and try to hide. She does not like them at all. Soy also does not like it when her food bowl is touched while she is eating. She will growl and bark. Soy really likes the bath but she will run out of the bath at the end of it (in a playful way!) If someone unfamilar comes close to her home she might bark a little until she gets the chance to meet them. For a new family to know: Soy is described as loving and outgoing. Her activity level is medium to high. When her owner is home she will follow them around if she wants to eat. She loves to just be around people.Soy walks very well on the leash. She can sit abd stay on command. When she goes to the bathroom she normally looks for grass.
02/11/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: ” She is a very gentle dog… She is amazing with children…She loves anyone, people or pooches, who wants to love her…..” This is what Soy’s former owner related to us when he surrendered her into our care because of housing issues. Soy is an elegant lady, a cross between a Pitie and a Labrador. I would add a Dalmatian to the duo. She was owned since tender puppyhood and cared for beautifully. She is as white as snow but for a few markings. I always find Soy, laying immobile on her blanket, like she has not moved in days…She is out of place. Too much noise, too many people, too many dogs…She used to live alone with one master she loved…Yes, she is quite lost…Soy complies, though and even gets “closer” when she recognizes a steady volunteer. She then squeezes against me and gives soft kisses. She walks well on the leash and does her business in the street. She sits on command but does not play ball yet. Soy is generally uncomfortable in playgroups with her peers . Her former owner says, though that she was friendly with all her neighbourhood’s dogs. I like Soy a lot. She is gorgeous, well mannered, shy for now and I know she has the potential to be once again a happy and giving pet… She is waiting for the “kiss” that will wake up and lighten up her mood. That “kiss” is you, her new master or family who will make her yours, your forever best friend.
02/26/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Update: 2/26/16 Since Soy’s SAFER she has displayed some very concerning behavior while in the shelter. One time a volunteer was attempting to remove Soy from the kennel. She became overstimulated and attempted biting the leash but instead ended up biting the volunteer’s hand. Additionally, Soy displayed some resource guarding behavior in the kennel snapping at a staff member attempting to remove her empty food tray. Soy then snapped at the staff worker when the staff worker attempted moving her from the kennel. Soy’s behavior seems to be declining in the shelter and for this reason the behavior department believes that placement with a rescue is best at this time. SAFER: 2/9/16 Soy walks with a low fearful body language on leash. She was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body, but trying to stay close. Soy was shy during handling with a fearful body language. She had a low body position during the tag test, but followed the assessor at the end of the leash. Soy was not interested in toys. Soy was surrender to us. Soy was surrender to us. According to her previous owner Soy my initially be shy and nervous around strangers, but is eager to warm up to people and animals after a few minutes. Soy is always friendly with the dogs in the area but she hasn’t spent a lot of time with dogs. The owner stated Soy does not like it when her food bowl is touched while she is eating, she will growl and bark”. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification to address this guarding behavior and can extensively counsel potential adopters before placement into a permanent home. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is stiff and fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, shy body language , mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy 1. No interest.
02/07/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Soy has slowly become more tolerant of dogs while socializing throughout her stay here. She initially would retreat and offer correction but warmed up enough to offer play bows to select dogs. Her owner reports Soy is always friendly with the dogs in the area, but she hasn’t spend a lot of time with dogs. Soy will likely need training in order to help her learn how to properly socialize as she has not had the opportunity in her previous home to interact with many dogs. The behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction as well as allowing her time to acclimate to her new surroundings before introducing her to any resident dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Soy is tense upon enetering the yard. She allows the male helper to approach and sniff, body still tense. When the helper dog turns to walk away, Soy briefly follows and sniffs. When approached face-to-face by the other dog, she offers a small lip curl (likely a distance increasing behavior). 2/10 update: Soy is uncomfortable, entering the yard with a low body and her tail tucked. She warms up to a calm, social female who is respectful. Soy does approach with a low wagging tail to sniff before walking away. She is not comfortable with play, however, as she barks and moves toward the other dog when solicited. 2/11 update: Soy is becoming more comfortable interacting. She will approach dogs with a loose body and a low tail wag. She allows the other dog to solicit with a few bows before giving a short growl and moving away.
