01/06/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
1/6/16 18:50 Basic information: Sosa is a roughly 2 yr. old Am Pit Bull mix. The Owner got her from a friend as a gift; he has owned Sosa for over 2 yrs. The owner surrendered Sosa because of personal problems. Sosa has no health problems and has never been taken to a vet. Socialization: Around strangers Sosa is friendly playful. Sosa has lived with a 10 year old child, he is relaxed and playful around children and adults he does not know. Sosa has never been around other dogs or cats so the owner has no idea how Sosa would behave around them. Sosa has never bitten anyone. Behavior: The owner stats that Sosa is not bothered when some moves his food or treats while he is eating, when someone takes his toys away or when someone disturbs him while sleeping. Sosa likes to be brushed and given bathes but has never had his nails trimmed. When an unfamiliar person or animal approaches a family member or his home he approaches them in a friendly manor. The owner does not know how Sosa is around loud noises such as storms or fireworks. For a new family to know: The owner describes Sosa as friendly, affectionate and playful with a very high activity level. His favorite activity is to play fetch with his owner. In the home Sosa tends to follow the owner around the house and is kept mainly outside in a yard. Sosa sleeps in the floor of the bedroom on a blanket. Sosa was fed various name brand dry and wet dog food two times a day. He is house trained and has never had an accident in the home, when outside he goes to the bathroom on or around trees and grass. Sosa does not know any commands. For exercise Sosa is used to playing in the backyard and goes in and out as he pleases. Sosa has never been walked of the leash but he does pull very hard when on it. Behavior during intake: Sosa was relaxed with lose body, when approached by staff. Sosa allowed to be, scanned (-), collared and placed in a dog kennel.

A volunteer writes: I’m counting on Sammy Sosa being flattered that our Sosa is wearing a Yankees coat! Our handsome, well groomed caramel delight was surrendered by his family due to “personal problems”. We’re told he’s friendly and playful, lived with a 10 year old child and is relaxed and playful with people and children he doesn’t know. We’re also told he’s housetrained (check), likes to be brushed and bathed, and loves to play fetch. Sosa and I had a nice walk to the park, he wags his tail at dogs we pass and those in backyard pens, and he’s alert and curious about everything. In the backyard he stands on his hind legs to better observe what’s happening in other pens, and he’s hysterical to watch. He’s smart and likes to know what everyone is doing. He takes treats gently, gives soft kisses and then runs off again to watch what’s going on. Friendly, active, affectionate and sweet, Sosa is used to having a family to take care of and slept on a blanket on the floor of his person’s bedroom. We’re rooting for him to have that again, so come on…..let’s give this guy his home run and come adopt him today!!
01/08/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Sosa pulls hard on the leash. He was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up, mouthy (light). He was excited during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. Sosa was excitable (mouthy light) but playful while playing tag. He took the toy away with a soft body language. Sosa was surrender to us. His previous owner describes Sosa as friendly, affectionate and playful with a very high activity level. Around strangers Sosa is friendly playful. Sosa has lived with a 10 year old child, he is relaxed and playful around children and adults he does not know. Sosa has never been around other dogs or cats. The owner stats that Sosa is not bothered when some moves his food or treats while he is eating, when someone takes his toys away. Sosa appears to be a high-energy dog that will likely do best with an adopter prepared to provide mental and physical stimulation and appropriate outlets for his energy. During the tag interaction Sosa was quick to use his mouth in play, resulting in him mouthing handlers with light pressure. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment. We also recommend a home without young children; older children can be considered pending interaction. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Follows at end of leash, body soft, jumps on the assessor, mouthy (light) Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. 1/10 update: Sosa is not thriving in the shelter environment and has begun growling when approached. This behavior appears to be limited to inside the kennel, but due to Sosa’s stress level we recommend placement into a stable home environment as quickly as possible.
