A volunteer writes: Elegant and gorgeous, Miss Sophie is a head turner as we walk down busy 1st Avenue. The fact that she has amazing leash manners adds to her beauty and I find myself standing a little taller to be worthy of such an outstanding companion. Her coat is clean and groomed, her weight perfect for her size and it’s clear she’s been lovingly taken care of before joining us when her person no longer had time to care for her. We’re told she’s playful with kids of all ages and likes to lick them (awwww…), lived with and was relaxed and respectful of three small dogs (Maltese, Minpin, Shih Tzu), as well as a cat with whom she was playful. Talk about a well rounded doggie!! Sophie doesn’t guard her things, and thinks her person is playing when taking a toy away, enjoys baths and being brushed, likes to play with toys, is “very housetrained” and loves chicken and rice. She knows ‘sit’ in Spanish, and is “friendly, affectionate and mellow”. Sophie is a delight and I loved my time with her. Once comfortable she leaned into me for petting, gave me soft kisses, and was content to sit with me, head in my lap for a good ear scratch. So gentle, calm and easy, I see her cuddled on the sofa with her new family, reading, watching TV or simply doing nothing but enjoying each other’s company. She’s an absolute love, hoping you’ll stop by to meet her today.
A volunteer updates:
I met Sophie about 2 years ago. She was a beautiful, shy and unsure youngster who got quickly the attention of adopters. She is all grown up now and has bloomed into a well mannered , composed, elegant and gentle dame indicating proper upbringing for a family pet who lived with children and small pooches. She is reserved which I love and shows the Shepher’s intuition and intelligence and gives herself in when she feels sure about me. She is so beautiful, calm and leans on me for caresses and bonding. Her eyes are still the two burning coals I remember she had as a puppy… Come and meet our gorgeous Sophie. She would love to belong again and be your forever and loyal companion.
PROFILE :
Sophie is friendly and outgoing towards strangers and will approach for a sniff. She is playful with kids of all ages and likes to lick them. She plays gently with both adults and children and lives with three small dogs (maltese, miniture pincher, and shih tzu). She is relaxed and playful with them and respectful of their space when necessary. She lives with one cat as well and is relaxed and playful with her. She has never bitten another animal or human.
Sophie isn’t bothered when her food bowl and treats and think her owner is trying to play when it’s a toy being taken away. She’s never been pulled off of furniture, held from something she wants, and woken from her slumber so it’s unknown how she would react. She enjoys baths and a good brushing but has never had her nails trimmed so it’s unknown how she would react. She isn’t bothered when an unfamiliar person approaches her home or humans.
Sophie is friendly, affectionate, and mellow. She has a medium activity level and when she’s ready to play enjoys balls and squeaky toys. When her owner is home, she follows him around or hangs in her favorite spot. She’s kept mostly indoors and is very house-trained. She is weewee pad trained, only if the pad is in the bathroom and will go wherever she can pick up a scent outside. She has never been crate trained but knows sit (in Spanish). She loves chicken and rice.
Upon intake Sophie was docile, loose body and wanted pets when owners were present. When owners left she started to whine and wanted to close to whoever had her leash. She scanned positive for a microchip. Counselor brought her outside for a walk and she walked nicely by her side, only pulling when picking up a scent.

DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT:
Summary
PLAYGROUP:
5/3: When introduced off leash to dogs in the care center Sophie is a bit nervous upon approach, though allows calm greeting. She wanders away and keeps only to herself.
5/4: Sophie keeps only to herself, and offers an alert bark before backing away when dogs approach.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
During her initial medical exam, Sophie was shy but allowed handling.
ENERGY LEVEL:
We have no history on Sophie so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Average (suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience)
