A staff member writes: Sophia is what I like to call a “fun” dog. She is very upbeat, playful, and even a bit silly. While out in the play yard with me she had 2 toys. She couldn’t decide which one to fetch (so silly), so she ran back and forth to both. LOL. Sophia can sit, and takes treats so nicely, which was a surprise, considering how active she is. Sophia loves to give kisses and sit on your lap (she doesn’t even need an invitation). Sophia walks nicely on leash, only pulling a little bit. I like Sophia. I know you will, too!!! Please come to Staten Island ACC and meet her.

For a New Family to Know:
Sophia is described as friendly, excitable, and playful with a very high activity level. When in the home, Sophia is the type to follow you around seeking attention. When left alone in the home, Sophia was left in a crate but she was well-behaved. She was kept mostly indoors and slept in on the couch. She was fed Blue Ribbon dry dog food and table food. She is very house-trained and had only done accident. For exercise, she enjoyed playing in the yard and going for brisk walks. On the leash, Sophia walks well, only pulled slightly if she sees something that interests her. Client never let Sophia off leash. She usually used the bathroom on the grass.
BEHAVIOR :
Sophia came into our center as an owner surrender citing Sophia bit the owner’s 6 year old child when approached while Sophia was sitting in front of her crate, should be noted owner reports correcting negative behaviors by slapping Sophia on the muzzle. Owner reports typically Sophia is relaxed, respectful, and playful around children and strangers. Owner did not allow Sophia to interact with other dogs on walks so she does not have experience socializing with other dogs, behavior around cats is unknown. Owner reports Sophia is not bothered if anyone touches his Food, Toys, Treats. It is reported Sophia is house trained and crate trained, well behaved when alone in the home. She is described as friendly, excitable, and playful. Sophia pulled on leash for her relief walk. She held gaze for three full seconds during Look item. Sophia leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, lip lick. She was distracted and unresponsive during Tag game. Sophia did not pull back paw on both Squeeze items, lick assessor’s hand. She kept a firm grip on Toy, grabbing it quickly when approached by assess-a-hand, a bit stiff. Sophia approached the helper dog slowly, with an escalating vocalization. The Behavior Team feels Sophia would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have very young children.

GROUP BEHAVIOR
When greeting a male dog through a gate, Sophia was instantly reactive and continued to snap after corrections. She was not able to settle down and was taken back inside without any further introduction.
5/20 update : Sophia was muzzled when introduced to a male greeter dog. She appeared very stiff and growled. She would often run of and mount the male greeter when he is not facing her. She did not attempt to solicit any play. When walking around the yard on leash, Sophia was showing the same behaviors once muzzle was removed. There was not further introduction.
