03/17/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
03/17/16 20:06 BASIC INFO Sonic (nicknamed Big Boy) is an 8 year old male Cane Corso / Great Dane mix. His owner found him in an abandoned apt when he was 1 month old and had to surrender him due to landlord conflict. SOCIALIZATION Sonic barks and growls at strangers at first. He lived with two 0-2 year old children and was relaxed, playful, and tolerant with them. They climbed on and rode him. He stayed with them while they slept and would bark to alert his owner if they woke up. He plays gently with people. He lived with a large male and medium female dog. The male would growl and him first and Sonic would growl back, but they didn’t fight physically. He would try to play with and sometimes hump the female and she would snap at him, which he always tolerated. Sonic barked at strange dogs outside and growled at cats outside. He’s never bit anyone. BEHAVIOR Sonic shakes during thunder storms. He doesn’t mind if someone takes his food/treat/toy (even new people), move him off furniture, hold/restrain him, wake him up, bathe him, or brush him. He barks and growls at strangers who approach and talk to his owner on walks. He barks at strangers when they first come over but becomes friendly with them in 10 minutes – 2 hours (sooner for women than men), jumping up and allowing them to pet him. He backs away and barks if a child points a toy gun at him and growls if an adult points at him. He once lunged at a woman who was running by her owner from behind, knocking her cell phone (which was pointed at his owner) from her hand, but not biting her. FOR A NEW FAMILY TO KNOW Sonic’s owner describes him as friendly, affectionate, playful, mellow, and medium energy. He likes to sprawl out on the floor, cuddle with his family, and give them kisses. He plays chase and fetch and likes balls and squeaky toys. He lived inside and slept next to his owner’s bed. He ate dry senior Eukanuba food. He’s housetrained, pottied anywhere outside, and only had accidents (#1) while home alone. He whined while left alone at home. In a pop-up crate he would lightly push at the door with his nose. He’s bilingual, doesn’t beg for food, and knows sit, down, and give paw. He went for slow walks and didn’t pull on his leash. Off-leash, he wandered but came when called. INTAKE Sonic lied down next to his owner. He often barked at people he saw through the door window.
03/19/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Sonic had lived with his family since he was one month old; he’s now 8 years old and trying to figure out where everyone he loved has gone. He lived with 2 year old twins and was relaxed, tolerant and playful with them as they rode on his back. He stayed with them while they slept and would bark to alert his owner if they woke up. He plays gently with people, is scared of thunderstorms, barks at people when he first meets them but warms up over time, he likes to sprawl out on the floor and cuddle with his family, is housetrained (check and double check!!), knows ‘sit’, ‘down’ and ‘give paw’. We’re also told that he will lunge towards people when he’s being walked which he did, so I then walked him on a very short leash and he was good. He’s quite nice on leash, making it a pleasant walk after we learned each other’s quirks. Off leash in the back he took treats gently, showed off his sit, and loved playing with a ball, his big feet clumsily pouncing as he ran. Too cute! He came when I called him and lay his head on my lap, and then ran off to chase some birds that had flown into our pen. Sonic needs an experienced person who understands his background and is willing to give him the time he needs to adjust to new people. Sonic is quirky (aren’t we all?), and with patience, love, structure and more love, hopefully will find himself in the heart of a new family.
03/22/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Sonic shows some concerning when the behavior team takes him out for his assessment. He became to growl and didn’t want the assessor to approach to him showing some type of protection with the behavior assistant. Sonic show some strange behavior during the intake according to the admission staff “He lunged while growling at the staff member”. The owner stated that Sonic will barks and growls at strangers at first. He lived with two 0-2 year old children and was relaxed, playful, and tolerant with them. He lived with a large male and medium female dog. The male would growl and him first and Sonic would growl back, but they didn’t fight physically. He would try to play with and sometimes hump the female and she would snap at him, which he always tolerated. Sonic barked at strange dogs outside and growled at cats outside. He doesn’t mind if someone takes his food/treat/toy (even new people). According to a volunteer Sonic will lunge towards people when he’s being walked”. Due to the behavior demonstrated in the shelter and his owner surrender profile the behavior department believes that Sonic is not an appropriate candidate for SAFER at this time. The behavior department feels that he would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home.
03/22/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs, Sonic displays sexually motivated behavior at first – sniffing, posturing to mount the female greeter. When solicited with play, Sonic does not reciprocate. When the human handler attempts to remove the greeter dog from the pen, Sonic becomes tense and begins to bark at the handler. The behavior department recommends allowuing Sonic time to adjust into a stable environment before following up on his behvaior around other dogs. Previous owner cites the following: “He lived with a large male and medium female dog. The male would growl and him first and Sonic would growl back, but they didn’t fight physically. He would try to play with and sometimes hump the female and she would snap at him, which he always tolerated.”
