MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 11/30/16: During his initial medical examination, Solo was fearful with a tucked tail, watching his handlers closely, and allowing only brief minimal handling. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the fear/avoidance behavior displayed in the care center, we cannot fully evaluate Solo and feel that he will be best set up to succeed through placement with a New Hope partner. We recommend only positive reinforcement-based, force-free training for Solo as aversive methods are likely to heighten his fear and increase aggression. _x_Single-pet home _x_Recommend no dog parks Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Solo is extremely nervous around strangers and can be difficult to handle. 11/30/16 16:37 BASIC INFORMATION Solo is a gray and white, neutered American Pit bull that is 5 years old. The owners bred Solo at home. Since a puppy he has been a member of the family. The owner is surrendering Solo due to personal issues. Solo has no known illness. SOCIALIZATION Solo has lived with a 1 year old and is gentle around children. The barks when stranger come over and body is tense. But he keeps his distance and after a few days he warms up to new people. Around the family he is playful and friendly. He has lived with a small dog; they play and chase each other around the house (small friendly with only the house dog). He has never been around cats. BEHAVIOR Solo allowed the family to touch his food bowl while eating, removing toys from his mouth, or bones. Solo sometimes is protective and selective of people that approach the family. He has no bite history. But he lunges and tense up when small dog approach in the neighborhood. He is house trained and is taken outside 3 times a day. He also uses the new paper that is lay down in the bathroom FOR NEW FAMILIES TO KNOW Solo is described as playful and affectionate around the family. Solo when left alone is he is left in the kitchen. Solo enjoys playing with tennis balls and hard toys. He knows the commands give me five, come, sit and stay. He does not like to sleep on the floor and researches for a pillow or dog bed. He is playful with the family and follows them around the house. BEHAVIOR DURING INTAKE Solo was nervous and panting. He growl and lunged when counselor approached. But with the assistance of the owner he was scanned, collard, scanned and photographed.

Other notes: Solo is tense and avoids new people, needing several days to warm up. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 11/30/16 Summary: Solo has been difficult to remove from and return to the kennel. Solo has allowed some handling in the care center but he is tense and avoids interaction with his new caretakers, in line with his owner’s report of Solo’s behavior around strangers. He watches and tracks the humans around him carefully at all times. Due to the behaviors observed, and out of concern for his stress level, we do not feel it is appropriate to perform a handling assessment at this time. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Solo enters the pen displays very nervous body language. His body is lowered and his tail tucked. He chooses not to greet the greeter dog so the leash of the greeter dog is held to give Solo the opportunity to approach. He comes close to her, but displays a lip curl when she greets him face to face. He keeps to himself as he explores the pen, never relaxing. He slowly approaches the rear end of the greeter dog and briefly sniffs her before continuing to wander. Solo continues to display nervous body language -a tucked tail and tense face. He displays a slight lip curl when the male greeter dog approaches his face, but continues to explore the pen. He does a poor job of managing his space, as he chooses to place himself close to the other dog but begins to growl and lip curl when the greeter dog softly greets him. The session is ended.
