02/19/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
02/19/17 13:27 Basic Information: Soca is a 3 year old neutered male Pit Bull that has no past or current medical issues that the owner is aware of. Owner has had Soca since he was a puppy but had to surrender due to animal biting the owner. Socialization: According to the owner, around strangers Soca is usually friendly and plays gently with adults. He has been around an 8 year old child and owner stated that he was always relaxed and respectful around the child. Owner does not have another dog or cat in the home so behavior is unknown but did state that on 2/18, Soca bit another dog but did not break skin. Behavior: Soca is not bothered by fireworks/thunderstorms, having his toys taken away, being pushed off furniture, being held/restrained, or being held/restrained. When someone tries to take away Soca’s food or treats tries to bathe him or trim his nails, he will bark, growl and possibly bite. When unfamiliar people would approach owner’s home or owner, Soca will bark at first and then try to play with the person. For a New Family to Know: Soca is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, and excitable. He has a very high activity level and loves to play with balls, stuffed animals and bones. In the home, he liked to follow the owner around from room to room. Soca was kept indoors only & is house trained. In the home, owner fed Soca wet food only brand Pedigree. Owner would keep Soca in a crate whenever the family left the house & stated he was well behaved in the crate. Soca knows the cues sit, come, down and paw. For exercise, owner took him on brisk walks on the leash. When on the leash, Soca tends to pull very hard. Owner was able to walk Soca off leash a few times & stated that he would wander at first but come back when name was called. Owner stated that her favorite thing about Soca was how playful and snuggly he is. Soca’s favorite activity in the home is playing with his toys and snuggling with the owner. Behavior during intake: Soca was relaxed during intake at first but once counselor tried to scan for a mc, Soca began to growl. No other handling was able to be done due to animal lip licking and growling.

03/01/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Neutered, Owner surrender Behavior towards strangers: Friendly Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward children: Exposure to eight year old child, relaxed and respectful Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Behavior toward cats: Unknown FG/RG: Growl, snap over food and treats Bite history: Yes, Soca bit another dog on the leg (no broken skin) then when owner got home, she attempted to put Soca back into his carrier and he escaped, when the owner when to grab him to put him back in, Soca bit her hand resulting in puncture wounds needing medical care. Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, and excitable with a high activity level. Other notes: Soca will growl and snap when trying to bathe him or trim his nails. SAFER ASSESSMENT: Soca has been difficult to remove from and return to the kennel. Soca has allowed some handling in the care center but he is tense and avoids interaction with his new caretakers. He watches and tracks the humans around him carefully at all times. Due to the behaviors observed, and out of concern for his stress level, we do not feel it is appropriate to perform a handling assessment at this time MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 02/19/17 During his initial medical examination, Soca snapped and allowed very minimal handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Soca is reported to have a high activity level in the home though had remained fearful throughout his stay in the care centers.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Soca is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the fear/avoidance behavior displayed in the care center, we cannot fully evaluate Soca and feel that he will be best set up to succeed through placement with a New Hope partner. We recommend only positive reinforcement-based, force-free training for Soca as aversive methods are likely to heighten his fear and increase aggression. Potential challenges: _X_Handling sensitivity _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Soca is extremely nervous around strangers and can be difficult to handle. It is important to respect those signs and to help Soca gain comfort and confidence in order to avoid escalation. _X_Resource guarding: Potential resource guarding was noted in the previous home as Soca was observed to growl and snap when engaged with items. For this reason we advise against ever removing items from Soca’s possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. Guidance from a qualified behaviorist is recommended.
