06/23/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: As white as snow is quite right for little 12 year old Snowy relinquished into our care as his ailing master could not provide for him anymore… Snowy is a Poodle and a lively one, trotting and even running, doing his business on the way (with some marking) and meeting without any fuss other pooches, big and small. He is really cute, a curly sheep who needs a good grooming and will look then like a million. He enjoys the lap and the arms but looks so lost in his huge kennel in our adoption ward…. Well, of course, Snowy wants to be home and loved just like he was with his former master who had only great things to say about his former pet. Lively, playful, good with kids, strangers and other dogs, housetrained, a good walker, non destructive and free of any handling issues. Come and meet sweet Snowy at the Manhattan Care Center.
06/21/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Snowy came into our center as an owner surrender citing owner’s health issues. It is reported He isn’t bothered if anyone touches his Food, Toys, Treats. He is reportedly housetrained to go while outside on walks or on wee wee pads indoors. Snowy is described as friendly, affectionate, playful. He was nervous upon positioning for Look item, but allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, eyes averted. Snowy stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, body soft. He was a bit fearful during Tag game, turned towards assessor’s hand on each pass, reluctant to approach at end. Snowy pulled his paw out on first paw Squeeze, did not pull back on second Squeeze. He showed no interest in Toy, though this may be due to environment as owner reports he enjoys ball, squeaky and stuffed toys. The Behavior Team feels Snowy would do best with an Experienced adopter. He may benefit initially from a slow approach/slow introduction so he can relax and know what to expect. Once comfortable, Snowy rolled over and became more comfortable in the assessment room. Snowy must have regularly scheduled professional grooming appointments, approximately every 10-12 weeks, as home bathing will cause his type of coat to severely mat and tangle. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful, his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is likely crouching, may have long lip or lip lick. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog gently pulls back and whimpers. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed or back. Toy 1: No interest.
