He has not lived with children, other dogs, or cats so his behavior is unknown towards them. He plays exuberantly with adults. He has not bitten a person or another animal. According to the owner, he has no behavioral issues. During fireworks or storms, he may get nervous and seek out his owner. He does not mind having his food bowl touched, items removed from his mouth, getting a bath, and having his paws touched. He is very friendly with strangers that approach him or the apartment. Snoopy is described as a friendly, affectionate, playful, and excitable dog with a very high activity level. He loves to play around with his owner and go on walks. He tends to follow his owner around when he comes home. He loves to play with any type of toy especially rope toys to play tug with. He was kept mostly indoors. He was fed Pedigree dry food. He loves to eat deli meat as treats. He appears to be house trained and will go on grass and cement according to the owner. He is well behaved when left alone unless there is a garbage can around. Summary: Snoopy was social, and playful during the handling assessment; though he displayed a high energy he allowed all handling. PLAYGROUP: When off leash at the Care Center, Snoopy displays hyper-motivated behavior. He attempts to engage in high energy rowdy play, but displays inappropriate behaviors. He persistently mounts the other dogs, ignoring both the corrections from them and interruptions from handlers. He is easily frustrated when separated from the other dogs; lunging at them. Due to his behaviorin group, we feel that Snoopy should be the only resident dog until he has had the opportunity to learn appropriate social skills when interacting with other dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 8/24/17 At intake Snoopy kept his body wiggly and loose and allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/25/17 During the examination Snoopy was very friendly, playful, easily handled and treated
ENERGY LEVEL: His previous owner reports a high activity level, which matches what we have seen in the care center. In the care center Snoopy has been active and enthusiastic. He may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the (behaviors outlined below). _X_No young children (under 5)-Due to the behavior seen in the care center, we feel that young children may be intimidated by Snoopy’s energy, and enthusiasm. Dog-savvy young children can be considered pending interaction. _X_ Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to the hyper-motivated behaviors that Snoopy has shown towards dogs at the Care Center (see GROUP BEHAVIOR SUMMARY), we feel that Snoopy should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed and reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Snoopy develop impulse control when interacting with other dogs. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control- According to the owner, when left alone Snoopy will tear through trash left in the home. It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_ Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition- Snoopy has shown some mouthiness in the care center Jumping up, and mouthing rope. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Snoopy’s teeth make contact with skin).
