08/29/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
CANINE BEHAVIOR EVALUATION for Snoopy A1122916 KNOWN HISTORY: Limited profile 8/22/2017 Intact male, owner surrender Behavior toward strangers: Growls, bares teeth Bite history: Yes has bitten on multiple occasion though only details of most recent bite were provided; Snoopy bit owner’s hand repeatedly – required stitches. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 08/29/2017 Summary: Due to his bite history in addition to the fearful behavior displayed in shelter, Snoopy is not an appropriate candidate for an assessment at this time. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 08/23/2017 During his initial medical examination, Snoopy snapped. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to his multiple bite history, the behavior department recommends Snoopy be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Snoopy to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Snoopy to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Snoopy presents with outside of the care centers. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression _X_Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression: Snoopy has a multiple-bite history and escalates quickly to snapping and biting, so this is an established behavior that he offers when he feels threatened. Snoopy needs careful behavior modification and management to prevent future bites. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods for Snoopy as more aversive techniques are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of aggression.
