12/04/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Intact Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 12/04/16 Summary: Smithers has remained challenging and difficult to manage during his stay at our care centers. Upon approach his kennel, Smithers is stiff bodied, hard barking and whale-eying and will attempt to lunge forward towards the kennel bars. Smithers watches and tracks the humans around him carefully at all times when removed from his kennel. Due to the behaviors observed, and out of concern for his stress level, we do not feel it is appropriate to perform a handling assessment at this time. PLAYGROUP: While being walked outside on a leash, Smithers sees another dog and pulls hard toward them. He has a relaxed body, wagging tail and whines. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 12/02/16 During his initial medical examination, Smithers struggled throughout, startling easily and growling. ENERGY LEVEL: IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Smithers has been observed to display attention seeking behavior at times when removed from his kennel though immediately without fair warning and/or provocation has quickly attempted to lunge and snap at his handlers, escalating rapidly. We cannot with much confidence predict how he may behave once away from this environment though advise exercising caution when attempting to modify these behaviors. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is strongly recommended to address any potential issues he may present with in a home environment. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner (Smithers threshold for aggression has been observed to be low and his escalation rapid, so we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide an experienced foster home and consultation with a behaviorist to address safety concerns before placement into an adoptive home.) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Because Smithers has displayed clear warning signals and poses a potential bite risk, the behavior department strongly recommends an experienced adult only home who can safely and comfortably manage this behavior and further assess once in a stable environment)
