05/14/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
CANINE BEHAVIOR EVALUATION for Smiles A111151 KNOWN HISTORY: 05/09/17 Intact male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 05/14/17 Summary: Smiles has been difficult to remove from and return to the kennel. Smiles has allowed some handling in the care center but he is tense and avoids interaction with his new caretakers. He watches and tracks the humans around him carefully at all times; Because Smiles shows little tolerance to novel stimuli and has been observed to escalate rapidly, out of concern for his stress level and safety of staff, a SAFER assessment will not be performed. PLAYGROUP: 5/12: Another attempt was made to introduce Smiles off leash to a female dog. He continued to display the same body language when greeting her through the gate. When the handler attempted to place a muzzle on him, Smiles closes his mouth and hard stares. His warnings were respected and the attempts were suspended. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 05/10/17 During his initial medical examination, Smiles was tense and snapped when handled. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Smiles has attempted to snap and lunge at passerby humans and dogs while on leash during his stay in the care center. Smiles has displayed consistent behavior in the care center; growling/lunging at any passerby, growling upon direct touch, hard staring. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the warning and distance-increasing behaviors, in addition to the threats of aggression, shown in the care center, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide force free behavior modification to address the underlying anxiety. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Smiles is extremely nervous around strangers and can be difficult to handle. He show clear signs of discomfort and it is important to respect those signs and to help Smiles gain comfort and confidence in order to avoid escalation. Smiles has displayed no social behavior towards handlers and attempts to increase distance and avoid contact. Because he is so uncomfortable, Smiles does not tolerate any form of human-touch and has attempted to snap upon direct contact.
05/11/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Smiles was surrendered to the Care Center as a stray so his past behavior around dogs is unknown. 5/11: When greeting a novel female dog at the Care Center, Smiles displays conflicting body language as he begins to bark at the gate and low growl while play bowing. An attempt was made to place a muzzle on him, but due to his high level of anxiety, attempts were suspended. 5/12: Another attempt was made to introduce Smiles off leash to a female dog. He continued to display the same body language when greeting her through the gate. When the handler attempted to place a muzzle on him, Smiles closes his mouth and hard stares. His warnings were respected and the attempts were suspended. The Behavior Department recommends that only well-socialized, tolerant dogs should be used when introducing Smiles to novel dogs. All introductions should be conducted slowly and be under supervision.
