08/01/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Pretty Skyler has been beautifully cared for but clearly was poorly socialized. She was surrendered into our care as she was too protective of her short time owner…Such a dog needs experienced hands and a connoisseur of the breed (Skyler is a Puggle) to eventually become a little bit more of a socialite even that she is already eight years of age. There will be a need for love and patience but I believe in Skyler after having spent some time with her. Skyler never growled or showed teeth at me although she did bark in discontentment each time I put her back in her den after our time together. It was short lived. Treats calm her down usually. She is leashed easily, pulls quite a bit on the leash and does her business as soon as she is out of the building. She does not mind a scarf around her neck and even a photo session. Birds and other dogs do not catch much of her attention (even those sticking their nose in her door), at least in our care. As we sit on the sidewalk, Skyler settles next to me (not on my lap) and accepts caresses. I am just a stranger to her….I wish I could say more, get to know her more… Skyler(and I) so wish for a chance to better herself… Who does not want to be good???? Will you be the one opening your door to Skyler, train her and teach her that there is out there a world and people to discover and love. A volunteer updates: I am so proud of Skyler. I have been taking her out almost daily and she has become one outgoing little lady. She is really looking forward to her walks and her little cuddling sessions on the sidewalk. She never forgets to ask for treats, her forelegs on my lap. Her eyes are bright and her mouth wide open in a smile. I do believe in Skyler. I know she can become a very pleasant and loving pet in experienced hands. It is a question to be willing to give her a chance. Skyler is all worth it!!!

07/27/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Skyler walks calmly on leash. She was fearful and repeatedly attempted to get away from the handler during the assessment. Skyler becomes extremely frightened (low growl) during the tag interaction, tail tucked, and trying to exit room. The behavior team decided to skip the handling part of the assessment for safety reasons. During the resources Skyler was not interested in toys. Skyler was surrender to us. According to his previous owner Skyler is fearful of strangers & takes a couple of days to adjust. Skyler will bark and low growl when a stranger comes near her or her owner & the family. Skyler appears to be fearful & protective of strangers when they are near her owner. Skyler also reacts to other dogs, especially female dogs. She will lunge, growl & bark. Skyler allows the owner to touch her & come near her when she is eating & also allows owner to remove objects from her mouth with ease”. The behavior department feels that she would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, shy body language, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 5. Dog growls, tail is tucked, mouth closed, body stiff Toy 1.
