Skyler
Hello, my name is Skyler. My animal id is #10933. I am a female white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 27-Oct-2017.
Skyler is being placed at risk due to increased stress in care center. While Skyler has shown progress with handlers, she continues to show distance increasing behaviors (hard barking) in kennel and is not thriving in the shelter environment. At this time there are no know medical concerns for Skyler.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
A volunteer writes: I love when I take my leash down from it’s peg, a dog gets all excited and bouncy, as to her, it means ‘I’m going out’! It’s the cutest and most fun thing to watch, as you know this is a dog who loves her walks. At first shy in her kennel, she decided I’m friend material, and she joined me for a stroll to the park. She’s certainly housetrained, ‘going’ immediately once we were outside, and we both enjoyed our walk, as her leash manners are lovely. It’s clear she’s looking for something or someone as we walk, and she often holds up her head as if she’s listening intently. Staff tells me she’s a favorite to bring in their office and just hang out while they work, and she’ll often just fall asleep on a blanket and softly snore. I can just picture it, can you? Off leash in a pen, Skylar does some pacing, joins me on the bench for a kiss, or two, or three, and as of this writing, isn’t interested in toys or treats. It’s clear Skylar has been a mom several times, but she’s been well cared for, as her coat is clean and groomed. It may take Skylar a little while to trust and love her new family, but she will. It’s said the best things in life are worth waiting for, and Skylar will certainly prove that old adage to be true.

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue
Upon intake, Skyler had her tail tucked between her legs and as she walked towards her kennel looked back constantly. Once she heard the other dogs barking, Skyler pulled hard on the leash to try and leave the room. Skyler had to be lifted up into the kennel as she froze once she saw the open cage.
Basic Information:: Skyler is a 3 year old large breed mix female dog. Skyler was surrendered because client could no longer hold onto her and she had a dog of her own. Skyler has no known injuries or health problems and has not seen a vet recently.

Look:: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted, body posture is stiff and fearful, tail is low and not moving. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity:: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, tail is between legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick.
Tag:: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is likely crouching, may have a long lip or lip lick.
Paw squeeze 1:: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Eyes are averted and ears are relaxed or back.

Summary:: Skyler approached the assessor in the assessment room cautiously after a few minutes. She had a low, tense body during the assessment but allowed all handling.
Summary (1):: Sklyer initially displayed fearful behavior when greeting dogs in the care center. She has begun to open up and display brief interest in greeting and play with polite dogs. Slow introductions are recommended between Skyler and polite dogs. History around dogs is unknown due to arriving as a stray. 10/29: When introduced off leash to the male greeter dog, Skyler is nervous and avoidant. She becomes a bit tense when approached and sniffed.
Summary (2):: 10/30: Skyler is fearful and keeps to herself. 11/1: Skyler approaches and offers brief greeting. She follows and seeks handler attention.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Skyler so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center, she displays a medium level of activity.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: Skyler has displayed warning behaviors in her kennel towards novel people (barking, distance increasing), but once outside of her kennel and provided adequate time to acclimate displays highly social behavior. She will solicit attention and petting from handlers and take treats in a gentle manner. When exploring the yard she will return and check in with handlers, sitting close by and leaning in with soft body and soft eyes.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)

Recommendations:: No young children (under 5)
Recommendations comments:: No young children: Due to the behavior seen in the care center, we feel that Skyler may be intimidated by young children. She needs a slow approach and time to warm up. She should never be forced to interact with new people, and should be allowed to greet and initiate an interaction at her own pace. Older, gentle children should have an in-depth interaction prior to adoption.
Potential challenges: : Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Skyler is fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Skyler the option to walk away from any social interaction. Skyler should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Skyler’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Skyler would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings.
