08/15/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
08/15/17 17:19 Basic Information: Skye is a female, 3 year old brown large breed pup. She was a gift from friend around 2 months old. They cannot keep her though because owner was drafted for the Army. She last went to the vet around a year ago and has no known health problems besides skin irritation. Socialization: Around strangers Skye is friendly and outgoing. She hasn’t spent time with children but she plays very exuberant and gentle with adults. She’s spent time around small breeds and is very playful and gentle with them. The owner has a cat too and Skye always plays with the cat in the home. Behavior: Skye often pees when she gets to excited indoors or outdoors. Skye isn’t bothered when someone reaches into her food dish or takes a toy and bone away. She tends to get afraid of the bathtub and tries jumping out and the owner has trimmed her nails before but not recently because she moves a lot. For A New Family: Skye is very friendly and excitable with a very high activity level. Her favorite activities are running around and she loves chewing on her squeaky toys. She follows you around in the home and at night time she likes to sleep in her kennel with the door open. She eats dry Purina dog food. She never has accidents in the home and is well behaved when left alone. She crate trained and can be in the crate all night. Her commands she knows are “sit, down, come and stay” also the equivalent to those words in Spanish. She loves brisk walks on the leash and in the beginning of the walk she’ll pull but not as much towards the end.
08/26/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: When you’re this beautiful? Sky’s the limit. (Also it never hurts to have a big pair of bunny ears scraping some clouds.) With her cinnamon coat and her megawatt smile, Skye is just the girl to light up a room, capture a heart, and take one’s breath away. But while beautiful girls can often be serious, sweet Skye is anything but. At just the sight of a toy, she’s goof and a gas, jumping to catch, then rolling, then SPLAT! Then up to do it all once again. Skye was recently surrendered to our care, and her family ties are plain to see. She has a round, full belly, an eagerness and easiness with people, and a desire to snuggle up as close as can be the moment the opportunity is there. She is, of course, not a fan of her kennel. But with a name like Skye, who could blame her for hating walls? And while initially anxious and unsure, she breaks into that grin the moment her kennel door swings open. Skye is a young, energetic, exuberant girl who can be jumpy when excited, so would do best with an experienced foster or adopter without any children for now. She has been somewhat uncomfortable with other dogs at the shelter, growing tense with prolonged introductions, so a meet and greet would be required, and future interactions heavily supervised. Skye did previously live with a cat with whom she was playful, and on whom she also slept. The nights may be growing longer and the days falling shorter, but you’ll forever be warm as the August sun with beautiful Skye at your side. Skye is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan ACC.
08/24/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Full Profile 8/21/17 Unaltered Female, Owner Surrender (In previous home for three years) Previously lived with: Adults and a cat Behavior toward strangers: Friendly and outgoing Behavior toward children: Unknown Behavior toward dogs: Playful and gentle with small dogs she knows Behavior toward cats: Playful Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Skye is described as very friendly and excitable with a very high activity level. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/24/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Summary: Skye was slow to warm up to the assessor, needing some time to approach. Once she approached, she allowed all handling and did not display any concerning behavior during her assessment. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: When given time to acclimate and the choice to interact, Skye has warmed-up to select handlers. When in her kennel, Skye initially growls continuously at the handler. When given time to acclimate, she stops growling and gives a stress yawn, then transitions from yawning to soliciting attention to the handler (i.e. ears back, wagging tail). When out of her kennel and approached by novel people, she hides behind the handler she is most familiar with and jumps up to seek comfort from that handler. She follows the familiar handler around with soft body language and seeking attention from them. When coaxed and given the choice to collect information from novel people, she slowly walks over to them and sits by their side, allowing petting. She gives subtle warning signals when she is overwhelmed with the petting (i.e. lip lick, stress yawn, tail tucked).
INTAKE BEHAVIOR: 8/21/17 At intake, Skye allowed all handling but was a bit timid and aloof. She hesitated when being placed into the kennel but once in was calm and quiet. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/21/17 During her initial medical exam, Skye was trembling and shied away from handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Skye’s previous owner described her as having a very high level of activity. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home _X_No children (under 13): Skye needs a very slow approach and to be given time to warm up to new people at her own pace. For this reason, we recommend an adult only home. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Skye has displayed fearful behavior at the care center, barking and growling in her kennel when people approach. She has shown that given time, she will allow select handlers to remove her from her kennel. She takes time to warm up to new handlers, but once she has warmed up she becomes social and allows all handling. Fearful behavior was not reported in her previous home, so we do not know how or if this behavior will surface in a new environment. The behavior department recommends an experienced adult home only until she can acclimate to her new home environment for the behavior to be further assessed. It is important to always go slow and give Skye the option to walk away from any social interaction. Skye should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Skye’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Skye would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. _X_Kennel presence: Skye growls, barks, and lunges at people she does not know when they approach her kennel. While we cannot be certain if this behavior will appear in any other contexts, in highly emotionally charged or stressful environments Skye may show behavior similar to what she is currently demonstrating in her kennel. We recommend potential adopters be comfortable managing this behavior and keeping themselves safe in any similar future situations.
08/25/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Skye has allowed greetings from new dogs at the care center, but shown some discomfort with lingering proximity. The behavior department recommends allowing Skye a period of decompression before immediate introductions to other dogs. Future introductions should be supervised, and conducted at a slow pace to respectful dogs. 8/25: When introduced off leash to a male dog at the center, Skye greets politely then avoids interaction. She lip curls for a lingering face to face greeting.
