06/25/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Skittle is not a tiny piece of candy but a sizable young and gorgeous young man ready to sweeten and spice your life with his presence. He came in a bit shy and with a cough. Both issues have mysteriously vanished, and Skittle romps now happily and exuberantly with his peers, males and females in the yard. He has remained very sweet and comes when called for standing hugs, not forgetting to give kisses. He is a big tail wagger, sits beautifully on command and takes treats very politely from my hand. He is a good walker, does his business without much marking, and even if sometimes he wants to mouth a little my hand, he stops upon request, no toy or treat needed. Skittle is a very elegant dog, perched on tall legs and dressed very attractively, his bright eyes matching his coat color. He will make a great forever best friend, loving and fun at the same time. Come and meet him soon at the Manhattan Care Center. A volunteer adds: Skittle is another dog I look forward to spending time with when I am at the care center. One, he is beautiful, two, he is well mannered, three, he is so manageable by me, an older person and four, he is very friendly and super affectionate. He has other qualities too, like loving the company of other dogs, males and females and the company of people, even when there is a large pack of them. Noises in the street do not bother him and he so enjoys going to the park and blends in with the crowd…I love his smile, his gentle face and the way he waits patiently in his kennel, laying by his door. Skittle will make a wonderful forever best friend. Ask for him, spend time with him and take him home. He is for sure one of the best decisions you will make in your life…

DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Skittle plays exuberantly with other dogs in the care center. The behavior department feels Skittle may be most compatible with other dogs who are highly social and playful. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake Dog was affectionate and energetic. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 6/13/17 During his initial medical exam, Skittle allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Skittle so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) Potential challenges: _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: Skittle has shown some mouthiness in the care center. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Skittle’s teeth make contact with skin).
