09/13/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None Date of intake 9/9/2017 Male, stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: Date of assessment 9/12/2017 Look: 1. Dog shoulder rubs during positioning. Eyes averted, ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement. Once positioned he stands still, body soft. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game, indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Squeeze 1/ 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed Toy 1: 1. Dog playfully engages, keeps a firm grip, body neutral, playful grunt/snort. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Skater Boy was difficult to position for up-close tactile handling, shoulder rubbing and displacement self-grooming/licking on his paw, but tolerated all handling once positioned, remained soft throughout. PLAYGROUP: 9/10: When greeting a female dog through the fence, Skater Boy stiffens, growls, and lunges toward the fence. An off leash introduction has not yet been conducted due to this observed behavior. Due to observed fearful behavior, the behavior department recommends allowing Skater Boy a period of decompression before following up on behavior around dogs. Future introductions should be supervised and conducted at a very slow pace to well socialized, respectful dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Date of initial 9/12/2017 During his initial medical exam, Skater Boy jumped up at the leash, playful but difficult to handle. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Skater Boy so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, Skater Boy displays as having a high level of energy. He will benefit from daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially in the behaviors listed below) _X_No young children (under 5): Skater Boy is a big strong dog who may at times play exuberantly and we feel this may be intimidating to young children. Older, dog savvy children may be considered pending an in-depth interaction. He may do best with a slow introduction, preferably with a treat offered from a flat hand or tossed to him. Potential challenges: _X_Leash-biting: At times Skater Boy has jumped up at the leash while on walks. We cannot be certain if this behavior will appear in other contexts, though in highly emotionally charged or stressful environments Skater Boy may show behavior similar to what he is currently demonstrating when frustrated. It is recommended that he be walked on a harness and with a toy to offer to him if he begins to jump up. _X_:On leash reactivity: At the care center Skater Boy has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, lunging and growling. He may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs and novel stimuli that may startle him. _X_Fearful: Skater Boy seems a bit uncomfortable with quick movements as he has been seen barking and growling if approached by a stranger too quickly. Skater Boy gives all aprpopriate warning signals when uncomfortable. It is important to make sure he stays under threshold and is not pushed to escalate. He may do best with a slow introduction, preferably with a treat offered from a flat hand or tossed to him.
