08/05/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Why so serious? Oh. I get it. It’s hot, it’s humid, and summer is dwindling. Work days are long and weekends are short. There’s death, there’s taxes, and pumpkin spice lattes are only available in the fall. I get it. There’s a lot to be upset about. But I have the cure for all that ails you. It comes in the form of a grey gorilla meatball. And his name is Sirius. 2 year-old Sirius was recently surrendered to our care as he became “too strong” for his former family. Although he lived well with his human siblings ages 7 and 12, he was sometimes too much meatball for them, occasionally pulling on leash and bumping into them during play. Well I’m only slightly older than 12 (slightly!) but I enjoyed my walk with Sir Sirius more than I can say. Our little hungry hippo with the beautiful coat and never-ending smile stayed right by my side for the majority of our stroll, pulling only when something intriguing like a pup, or a squirrel, or a pigeon — OK he is intrigued by many things! — moved across our path. And even then, Sirius was a complete gentleman and responded well to a correction and a “tssk!” But while our walk was a dream, my favorite part of the day had to be when my watch read Cuddle O’ Clock. Yes, the moment I sat down beside our lovable lug, the kisses started coming and, thankfully, they didn’t stop. There were snorts and giggles (only one of those was mine) and before I knew it, I was covered in fur and slobber. Would I have it any other way? Get serious! And then come and meet him. Sirius is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
08/04/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Sirius came to as an owner surrender on 9/3/16. His owner reported that he lived with two children, ages seven and twelve and that he was gentle with them, although could become excited and knock them over. He reportedly plays with other dogs well, behavior around cats is unknown. Owner states he plays exuberantly with adults. He is reportedly not bothered if anyone touches his Food, Toys, Treats. Family describes him as friendly, affectionate, playful with a high activity level. Upon intake, Sirius was friendly and excitable, jumped up onto the counter and allowed all handling. Sirius pulled very hard on leash for his relief walk and into the SAFER assessment room. He held gaze for three full seconds during Look item, relaxed, sniffing assessor’s pants/focused on other stimuli. He leaned away from assessor during Sensitivity item, requiring a few attempts before accepting the touch. He was distracted and unresponsive to each pass during Tag game, pulling hard on leash. Sirius was focused on other stimuli during positioning for Squeeze item, once positioned he did not pull his paw back on both attempts. He playfully engaged with Toy, kept a firm grip, not stiff. Due to his size and strength, and history of knocking small children over when playing exuberantly, the Behavior Team feels Sirius would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have very young children. He may benefit from walking with a harness, as well as obedience classes to learn leash manners and body awareness. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, leaning away from assessor, mouth open. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, pulls hard on leash Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed Toy 1: 2. Dog keeps a firm grip, body not stiff.
08/04/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Sirius has exhibited sexually motivated behaviors when interacting with other dogs but does begin to engage in play once solicited. His owner reports “he loves to play with other dogs and runs around when he is in a new area or park.” The behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction to ensure compatability with any resident dogs. 8/4: When off leash with other dogs, Sirius is a bit tense when greeting, however begins to open up and even engage briefly with intent to mount. 8/6 update: Sirius is sexually motivated but will solicit flirty play with the female helper dog by offering bows and slaps.
