GONE 02/23/18

Singapore

Hello, my name is Singapore. My animal id is #21002. I am a female black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 6 months old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 18-Feb-2018.

Singapore is at risk due to behavior, Adult Only determination. Singapore is anxious in care center and seems to be startled easily with quick movements and noises. She does appear to have mild pyoderma, but otherwise is apparently healthy.

Let’s get to know each other a bit more…

A volunteer writes: Singapore is simply stunning, a vision in brindle with silky soft fur and Bette Davis eyes that go straight to your heart, the kind of girl who can’t help but turn heads and win compliments everywhere she goes. She’s like a perfectly proportioned Cane Corso who shrunk in the wash! Quiet and neat as a pin in her den, Singapore’s surprisingly strong once her paws hit the street and though she wags her tail and seems unconcerned by little dogs we pass she can react fearfully if a big dog lingers nearby so a harness is essential for comfort at both ends of the leash. She’s shy at first but once her trust is earned this petite Princess blossoms like a flower and for her photo shoot she posed with a smart head tilt, offered me soft hugs and mushy kisses and even dashed off a few playful zoomies once we were done! A diamond in the rough looking for an understanding family to smooth over her anxieties and reveal the shining gem within, all Singapore asks is patience, TLC and a safe space to snuggle and in return she’s offering enough love to last a lifetime. Beauty, brains and brindle too? That’s a bargain any way you look at it! Step up and welcome sweet Singapore home today, you’ll be so glad you did.

My medical notes are…

Weight: 67 lbs

Details on my behavior are…

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

  • Behavior History
  • Behavior Assessment

Officers got a call about a random abandoned pit bull and the civilian who called brought the dog in to the building because it was cold outside, the dog had also been there for hours. Dog was a little afraid at first but once officers fed the dog she seemed to warm up to them more.

Date of intake:: 2/18/2018

Spay/Neuter status:: No

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray

Date of assessment:: 2/19/2018

Look:: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.

Sensitivity:: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth.

Tag:: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is likely crouching, may have a long lip or lip lick.

Paw squeeze 1:: 1. Dog gently pulls back his/her paw.

Paw squeeze 2:: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Eyes are averted and ears are relaxed or back.

Flank squeeze 1:: Item not conducted

Flank squeeze 2:: Item not conducted

Toy:: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His/her body is between you and the toy, and is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness.

Summary:: Singapore did not approach the assessor in the assessor in the assessment room but did allow the assessor to approach her. She was aloof at first, but after a few minutes began to warm up and solicit petting. She appeared fearful during tag, pulling away and cowering, but she allowed all handling.

Summary:: Singapore has been observed to become reactive (lunges, growls) and uncomfortable in the presence of dogs in the care center. At this time, Singapore may be most comfortable as the only resident dog in a future home.

Summary (1):: 2/18: When introduced off leash to the female greeter dog, Singapore is fearful and keeps away from approach.

Summary (2):: 2/21: Singapore displays strong reactivity toward dogs on leash, lunging, barking, growling. She is muzzled for second off leash introduction due to these observations. Singapore appears fearful and attempts to flee the pen when introduced.

Date of initial:: 2/18/2018

Summary:: Singapore was tense and attempting to leave the room but allowed handling.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Singapore so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center, she displays a medium level of activity.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: ADULT ONLY HOME

Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to the level of fear Singapore displays with new people and quick movements at the care center, we recommend an adult only home. Single pet/no dog parks: At this time, Singapore may be most comfortable as the only resident dog in a future home due to discomfort displayed around other dogs in the care center.

Potential challenges: : Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Singapore is fearful at the care center and with quick movements. It is important to always go slow and give Singapore the option to walk away from any social interaction. Singapore should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Singapore’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Singapore would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. On leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Singapore has been observed to react to other dogs and human passerby on leash, lunging towards them, barking and growling. Singapore may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs and novel stimuli that may startle her. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
