Sinbad
Hello, my name is Sinbad. My animal id is #10226. I am a desexed male tan dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 11 years old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 19-Oct-2017, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- homeless.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Sinbad 10226 is at risk for behavior challenges (New Hope Only determination). He was described as friendly and affectionate with his previous owner but also nervous around strangers, which matches what we have seen in the care center. Sinbad has been timid and fearful in the care center, avoiding interaction and escalating to warning behaviors (growling, staring) when handled. Due to this behavior a handling assessment was not completed. We recommend placement into an adult-only home through a New Hope partner. There is no noted medical condition for Sinbad at this time.

Summary:: Due to the high levels of stress displayed in shelter in addition to his discomfort with novel stimuli, Sinbad is not an appropriate candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (1):: According to Sinbad’s previous owner, Sinbad did not socialize with other dogs while in his Care. 10/20: When off leash at the Care Center, Sinbad displays a nervous body posture, and avoid greeting the female dog at the gate. Before the pen door is opened, the greeter dog’s leash is held to give him a chance to approach, but Sinbad chooses to keep to himself and never approaches her.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Sinbad remains highly fearful in the care center, though owner reports a high energy level in a home environment.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: When approaching Sinbad in his kennel to take him out for playgroup, Sinbad became tense and uncomfortable. When unlocking the kennel, Sinbad growled and lunged at the kennel door. After leaving him for a few minutes to decompress, the handlers were able to take him out safely. Although, when in the process of collaring him, Sinbad low growled twice and hard stared. Moving slowly, handlers were able to successfully collar him, but did not attempt to socialize with him. He avoided the handlers in the pens, but he did hard stare when trying to rope him and bring him back into the building.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Sinbad is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Sinbad has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Sinbad is fearful at the care center, growling at people who approach his kennel, and is unable to be safely handled. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Sinbad to new and unfamiliar situations.
