02/13/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 2/7/17 Unaltered Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 2/12/17 Summary: Simpson has not been able to be removed from the kennel due to lunging and snapping at people when the kennel door is opened. He appears to be uncomfortable in the shelter environment. He has allowed very minimal handling from his caretakers. Out of concern for his stress levels and due to safety concerns, we feel Simpson is not a good candidate for a handling assessment at this time. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 2/7/17 During his initial medical exam Simpson was tense, resisted handling and snapped. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Simpson so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Simpson is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Simpson is not responding well to the shelter environment and is unable to be handled due to growling, snapping, and lunging when his kennel is opened. The behavior department recommends Simpson be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home and reassess his behavior in a stable home environment. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Simpson has displayed fearful behavior in the shelter, he lunges, growls, and snaps at people who open his kennel. Simpson is unable to be safely handled at the care center. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist who uses positive reinforcement, reward based training is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Simpson presents with outside of the care center. _X_Kennel presence
