10/29/16 09:55 Dupree A1095080 is a young male reddish/yellow brindle with a patch of white on his chest AMPBT mix who was found wandering a street in the Bronx two days ago by the finder. They aren’t able to keep Dupree due to him not getting along with the resident female dog (especially when they were fed near each other; he tried to “go after her” and take her food), but other times he was fine with the female. Also Dupree’s activity level is too high and he’s too big/strong/hyper for the finder’s young child that loved Dupree and they played along well. The finder stated Dupree appears to be housebroken as he was taken out twice a day and had no accidents in the home. Dupree began to bite/chew on the bathroom wall when he was placed in there to eat seperately from the female dog and would bark. The finder stated they touched/moved his food/food bowl and Dupree didn’t seem to mind it (that was noticed while at the BXAC as I was feeding him). It was also stated Dupree will do this teeth chattering thing where he shows his teeth and it may look as if he’s going to bite but he doesn’t (also noticed as I was handling him.) During intake Dupree had a loose, wiggly body and allowed all handling. He allowed to be scanned (+), collared and taken pictures of. Dupree didn’t seem to mind being lifted into the kennel as he didn’t want to enter on his own. He allowed me to place his food and water bowl into the cage and even move it slightly without issue. Dupree will attempt to run out of his kennel as soon as he sees even the slightest opening. He resists going into the kennel but can be lifted into it. At one point perhaps he was frustrated as I was attempting to lift him into the kennel and he placed his mouth on my finger but applied no pressure.

A volunteer writes: Hugs and kisses and smiles, oh my! Simba is a cute and compact little dude with a big personality and a heart sized to match. He likes to play fetch and get his zoomie on, but will sit politely for a treat and boy, does he love to snuggle! Stand-up hugs or lap lounging, hand nuzzling or face smooching, Simba does it all, and he does it so very well. He’s enthusiastic on leash but takes care of his business almost immediately, and while he doesn’t chase the pigeons we pass, playgroup with other dogs gets him a bit overexcited. He’ll need a refresher course in doggie socializing once settled in his new home. As a smart, eager-to-please boy, I’ve no doubt he’ll respond well to consistent positive training–and what a joy it will be to know you were the one to ‘raise him up right’ and help him be the best Simba he can be. He’s no athlete, but loves to sprint after the ball, then trot back without it for some praise, and is more than happy to share toys of any kind. Simba is a wonderful ‘people dog’ and he has all the makings of a great family pet. Be sure to ask for him by name when you visit, and come prepared for a snuggle spree!
11/02/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Intact, Stray Other notes: Simba was found wandering a street in the Bronx two days ago by the finder. They aren’t able to keep Simba due to him not getting along with the resident female dog (especially when they were fed near each other; he tried to “go after her” and take her food), but other times he was fine with the female. He runs after the female greeter dog while posturing to mount her. When unable to catch up to her, he begins to air-snap in her direction. One he is able to reach her, he continues to posture to mount, while air-snapping at the female greeter dog’s neck. MEDICAL Behavior: 10/29/16 During his initial medical examination, Simba readily allows all handling without issue. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience _X_Single-pet home (see groupbehavior) _X_Recommend no dog parks (see groupbehavior) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control (It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended.)
10/31/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Simba’s initial interactions raised concern (rushes in, at times vocalizes, air-snaps, tense). Simba has begun to make progress. He has often remained tense during greeting, and though appears interested in engaging in play, has show the potential to become quickly over aroused. His finder reports he ” did not get along with the resident female dog (especially when they were fed near each other; he tried to “go after her” and take her food), but other times he was fine with the female.” At this time, the behavior department feels that Simba should remain the only resident dog in a home until his behavior around them can be followed up on outside the care center. 10/31: When introduced off leash to other dogs in the care center, Simba rushes into the pen. He runs after the female greeter dog while posturing to mount her. When unable to catch up to her, he begins to air-snap in her direction. One he is able to reach her, he continues to posture to mount, while air-snapping at the female greeter dog’s neck. 11/2: Simba is muzzled for his second interaction. He is mostly distracted by the presence of his muzzle, however when approached by the female greeter, becomes stiff, and begins to vocalize. 11/9: Simba is tense during greeting. He frequently attempts to sniff the rear of the female helper dog. Simba begins to show interest in play and briefly hops around, though becomes overaroused when solicited with chase.
