02/26/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
02/26/17 12:02 On intake, a volunteer was holding silk. While holding, his young daughter came up to the dog and Silk immediatly climbed up on her and began licking her face. Silk sat nicely when counselor asked her to and she allowed counselor to collar. When counselor offered a treat, she gently sniffed it but did not take. Counselor had volunteer bring her over to area for pictures and she sat nicely but kept trying to get up to go towards and sniff the camera. She allowed counselor to pet her all over. While waiting to get vaccines, counselor sat on the ground with her and Silk sat on her lap. She allowed counselor to bear hug her.
03/11/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: “She’s a winner” one volunteer said to me, and I couldn’t agree more. Soft, gentle, great on leash, she wags her tail when she walks, never pulls on the leash and is happy to settle down with her person for some hugs. She closes her eyes in cuddle bliss, gently and gratefully accepting the love. Silk has been a mom many times, and she’s ready to be your one and only love. She’s a delight, and while she bears a few scars on her face (maybe puppy nibbles, maybe rough mating?), she’s as gentle and sweet as can be. You will fall in love with her as we did, and you’ll want to promise her a lifetime of love, nice walks, lots of cuddles, a soft bed and nutritious food…as we did. Her calmness creates an aura of well being in all she meets. Described as “social and allowed all handling” at her initial intake exam, to “no concerning behavior” during her behavior evaluation, she’s ready to feel the love from her new person or family. The perfect only dog, if you’re an experienced dog person, she’s hoping you’ll stop by to meet her today. I guarantee you’ll fall in love.
Another volunteer writes: Silk fabric–soft, luxurious, gentle and easy. Silk the dog–soft, luxurious, gentle and easy. So sweet, our Silk loves people and greets all with a gentle tail wag, recognizing her friends with an enthusiastic wag. A corporate ‘helper dog’, people are her favorite species! Her head in an inviting lap, she loves to be stroked and talked to, her gentleness unfolding with each stroke. Not a fan of the snow, she does her business quickly and then back inside, happy for the warmth. Silk has become comfortable with calm dogs in group play. I see Silk cuddled with her new person, undemanding and loving.
02/27/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 2/25/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 2/27/17 Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Silk displayed no concerning behaviors on her assessment. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs. PLAYGROUP: Silk has not been completely comfortable interacting with other dogs in the care center. She has become more comfortable with brief interactions in a controlled in-shelter setting, but may be most comofrtable as the only resident dog in a home at this time. Future introductions to respectful dogs should be conducted slowly. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 2/26/17 During her initial medical exam, Silk was social and allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Silk so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center, she displays a moderate activity level. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) Potential challenges: _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Silk has been observed to lunge and growl at other dogs in the care center. We recommend force free, positive reinforcement training to teach her a “Look” command, to focus on the person walking her rather than other dogs that she is passing by. A front clip harness or head halter would also be beneficial in managing this behavior. _X_Single pet home (see PLAYGROUP above)
02/27/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Silk has not been completely comfortable interacting with other dogs in the care center. She has become more comfortable with brief interactions in a controlled in-shelter setting, but may be most comofrtable as the only resident dog in a home at this time. Future introductions to respectful dogs should be conducted slowly. 2/27: Silk stiffens, growls and bares teeth when greeting through the gate. She is muzzled based on this observation. Upon entering the pen she is preoccupied by the presence of the muzzle. On one instance, she becomes uncomfortable and freezes when the male greeter approaches to sniff. 3/1: Silk is muzzled for her second interaction. She offers hard, correction (growling, air snapping) when solicited or approached. 3/2-3/3: Silk is softer when greeting a male dog through a barrier today (sniffs, wags), so she is introduced with no muzzle. She will briefly solicit play but is uncomfortable when it is reciprocated and offers appropriate correction (bark/growl and brief). 3/8-3/15: Silk is initially uncomfortable when approached, though begins to open up and and hop around playfully with polite dogs. She continues to offer correction if uncomfortable with more exuberant play.
