A VOLUNTEER WROTE: Has any dog ever had a more perfect name? Luv is just that — a love in every possible way. This adorable 6-month-old pup with a smushed-in boxer face walks nicely on the leash, is friendly toward other dogs and does her business outside like a good girl. She’s also affectionate and loves to give kisses. She arrived at the shelter as a stray on 7/8, but her former owner’s loss is one very lucky adopter’s gain. You will just love Luv, and she’ll “luv” you back. She weighs 43 pounds.
03/19/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Luv came in as a stray, so her past behaviors in a home are unknown. At intake it was reported Luv was relaxed and playful, she allowed all handling. During SAFER Luv came into the assessment room loose and wiggly, she was friendly and social towards the assessor. She allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Luv joins the game and mouths the leash in a playful manner during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Luv was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Luv approaches the gate but turns her head to avoid eye contact with the helper dog. The helper dog is allowed into the pen but kept on leash in order to allow Luv the opportunity to approach him if she wanted to. She allowed the other dog to sniff her genital area but air snapped when he approached her face. Afterwards she became uncomfortable with his presence. The behavior department feels she can be suitable for an “Average” adopter and a through dog to dog interaction before place into a permanent home. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, mouthing the leash in a playful manner. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. The helper dog is allowed into the pen but kept on leash in order to allow Luv the opportunity to approach him if she wanted to.
