07/17/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Sheba is such a happy, joyful, and eager girl. Her tail wags like a helicopter, and every time I try to stop petting her, she throws her little head back under my hand for more. It’s the sweetest thing! Sheba pulls a little on the leash but only because she’s excited about exploring everything. She seems to be housetrained, can sit for treats, and does her best to climb into your lap for pets if you’ll let her (she loves butt scratches, and will eagerly roll over for belly rubs). Sheba has been good with other dogs in playgroup at the ACC, although she did display a bit of protectiveness over her toys in her initial exam. Come and meet this charming, happy, tail-waggy little lady at the Brooklyn ACC today!

Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY:None 7/14/17 Unaltered female, Stray Previously lived with:Unknown Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 7/15/17 Look:1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity:1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag:1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1& 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 3. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is tense. Summary:Sheba was friendly and very high energy towards the assessor. PLAYGROUP: When off leash at the Care Center, Sheba displays a loose and wiggly body when greeting in a group of playful male and female dogs. She engages in running/chase play, with limited body contact. Sheba was surrender as a stray so her past behavior with other dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Sheba be placed in a home with a dog that matches her gentle play style. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 7/13/17: At intake Sheba appeared friendly, and playful. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 7/13/17: During the initial examination Sheba displayed a high energy levels. She solicits attention, and allowed all handling
ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Sheba so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5)- Due to potential toy guarding behavior. We feel that young children may not know to respect a warning. Older, dog savvy children can be considered as long as the adults feel confident that Sheba can be left alone while playing with her toy so she does not need to escalate to a growl. Behavior modification for food guarding behavior can be found at aspcapro.org. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding– We cannot be certain whether any guarding or possessive behavior may appear in a home environment, but we recommend adopters comfortable with safe management and modification of guarding behavior in case it does.
