A volunteer writes: She-Ra and He-Man were found fastened to our door one cold morning of March..They seemed to know and be accepting of each other. She-Ra is a rather thin gal, well dressed in a mouse grey suit. She acts keen, vigilant and always seems aware of what is going on around her, whether it be other dogs, treats or a ball. She is leashed in no time , is a fast walker and does her business while strolling around the block. She-Ra is quite intense in whatever she is doing. She does listen to simple orders like come, sit and stay. She enjoys turkey jerkies and will hop like a kanguru to get more. Her favorite thing, though is to play ball. She runs, jumps, does head shots and juggles the ball between her paws… She-ra is all in action..A soccer mom she is as it seems she had a litter not that long ago. She-Ra, although friendly and sociable with us, humans, does not seem, at least within our walls, to like her own kind.. Except maybe He-man. Could her behavior be the result of her confinement, her new circumstances? Could she be “friends” with some dogs? Who knows, really? She would have to be given a chance. She-Ra is at the Manhattan Care Center, dreaming of and waiting for a sweeter life…
03/28/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 3/25/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 3/27/17 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is wagging with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, distracted and focused on exit. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Summary: She Ra displayed a high level of energy and movement on her assessment. She allowed all handling and was social throughout. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Conflict Driven: These dogs are out to have a good time at another’s expense. They tend to target a dog that is giving very clear signals to back off and do not. This behavior is very distressing for the target dogs and should not be allowed to happen. PLAYGROUP: She Ra has displayed concerning behavior during interaction with other dogs in the care center, and has been muzzled for off leash introduction. During these interactions, She Ra was observed to display tense body language, eventually chasing after the helper dog while growling and snapping. Due to arriving as a stray, She Ra’s behavioral history around other dogs is unknown. The behavior department advises against placing She Ra into a home with other dogs. She Ra has also been observed to become reactive when passing by other dogs on-leash (vocalizing, growling, lunging toward). Future caretakers of She Ra should exercise caution when walking She Ra through areas where there may be high volumes of dog traffic. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 3/25/17 During her initial medical exam, She Ra was tense. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on She Ra so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. During her assessment, she jumped up on the assessor, apparently to seek out attention. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_Single-pet home: Due to concerning behavior displayed during in shelter interactions, She Ra may succeed best as the only resident dog in a home at this time _X_Recommend no dog parks: The behavior department recommends not placing She Ra into social settings with other dogs. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the severity and intensity of She Ra’s behavior towards other dogs, the behavior department recommends placement into an experienced foster home before placement into a permanent home to allow for a period of decompression before slowly introducing behavior modification protocol in a controlled environment. Safe and appropriate management is strongly advised. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_Social hyper-arousal _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: She Ra has been very reactive on leash when she sees other dogs at the care center, lunging and barking at them. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach She Ra a “Look” command to focus on the person walking her when she is passing other dogs.
03/26/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
She Ra has displayed concerning behavior during interaction with other dogs in the care center, and has been muzzled for off leash introduction. During these interactions, She Ra was observed to display tense body language, eventually chasing after the helper dog while growling and snapping. Due to arriving as a stray, She Ra’s behavioral history around other dogs is unknown. The behavior department advises against placing She Ra into a home with other dogs. She Ra has also been observed to become reactive when passing by other dogs on-leash (vocalizing, growling, luigning toward). Future caretakers of She Ra should exercise caution when walking She Ra through areas where there may be high volumes of dog traffic. 3/26: She Ra begins to emit high pitched vocalizations upon discovering the presence of other dogs in the yard. When greeting a dog through the fence, she frantically digs at the door- then tenses, hard barks and lunges toward the greeter. When introduced off leash on a muzzle, She Ra runs after and jumps on the back of the male greeter dog while growling- though is able to be interrupted by handlers. She then becomes distracted by the presence of the muzzle. 3/28: She Ra is muzzled for her second introduction. Once allowed inside the pen, she displays tense body posturing and runs after the helper dog while vocalizing and eventually snapping. The interaction is ended and She Ra is removed from the yard,
