07/19/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Ruh roh, Shaggy! Of course I thought of the iconic Scooby Doo character as soon as I met this ombre-coated hunk but he turned out to be such a smart, lively and elegant date the comparison didn’t last longer than a few minutes, and now I refer to him as Sir Shaggy instead! His lush fur, hazelnut-colored eyes and black-spotted tongue make it a challenge to try and guess his lineage, but whatever breeds he’s made up of, they sure turned out one handsome, happy dog. Shaggy can be a wee bit shy at first, but take him out to the yard and start tossing a tennis ball around, and the athletic puppy inside soon comes out to play as he grins and wags his tail, leaps after the ball and then pretty much ignores it until it’s back in my hand–no guarding issues to see here, folks! He appreciates petting, and I appreciate his luxuriously thick fur. When it comes to treats, he approaches slowly, sniffs very politely, then mouths them softly from my hand. A fairly good leash walker who takes care of business promptly and greets passing dogs with calm good manners, Shaggy is a joy to spend time with, and even went right back into his kennel without a fuss. Fun, friendly and fantastically good-looking, the only mystery left to solve is why such a great dog isn’t adopted yet? Shaggy is ready to take on any adventure and he’d love to find a new sidekick or two to help him out. Bring your family in to meet him today and don’t forget to pack the scooby snacks!
07/17/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Shaggy came into our center after police were called he was loose in the street. He was quiet, calm, and timid upon intake. Shaggy was nervous during his initial medical exam but allowed handling. He walked well on leash for his relief walk, but once he entered the SAFER assessment room he became very nervous, head and body low. Shaggy lip licked during Look item, backing away, tail tucked. He stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, ears back, mouth open, tail low. He was uncomfortable during Tag game, following at the end of the leash with low head and body, crouched at each pass, but approached with soft body at end of game. He gently pulled his paw back on both Squeeze attempts. Shaggy showed minimal interest in Toy, reacting to the squeak but never fully engaging. When off leash with other dogs Shaggy is tense and uncomfortable. He will freeze and lip lick when the helper dog sniffs him but once she walks away he relaxes and then will sniff her from behind. The Behavior Team feels Shaggy would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have young children. He will benefit from a slow approach/slow introduction, as well as going home to a calm, quiet, structured environment where he can relax and know what to expect. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted, lip lick, tail tucked, backing away Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in low position with relaxed body posture, mouth open. Tag: 2. Dog follows with low head and body, crouches at each pass. Squeeze 1 / 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, sniffs, then turns away. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs Shaggy is tense and uncomfortable. He will freeze and lip lick when the helper dog sniffs him but once she walks away he relaxes and then will sniff her from behind.
07/16/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Shaggy was intially uncomfortable with interaction off leash with other dogs, bowever has recently showed more interest in engaging in play with both males and females. The behavior team feels that Shaggy may be placed with another social dog, but should have slow, positive introductions as it;s been observed that he does best when given time to warm up to unfamiliar dogs. He arrived as a stray with no history, it is not known how his behavior with dogd will translate outside the care center. 7/16: When off leash with other dogs Shaggy is tense and uncomfortable. He will freeze and lip lick when the helper dog sniffs him but once she walks away he relaxes and then will sniff her from behind. 7/19: Shaggy ignores the other dog and sniffs around the yard. 7/20, 21: Shaggy engages in bouts of play with a playful female. 7/22 update: Shaggy engages in running play with males and females, offering butt bumps to solicit.
