09/25/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: We first met as she was soaking up some love from staff, sitting quietly, enjoying the attention. As we’re off for our walk, Shadow checks up often, her tail wagging and her face smiling as she enjoys the time. Already so smart, she sits for a treat before being asked, takes it gently and then waits for more. As lively as Shadow is, she doesn’t mind being tethered for photos, flashing her fabulous grin. Shadow loves other dogs, playing exuberantly as she bounces around a pen with her canine buddies. Head tilts, wagging tails, big smiles and lots of love are in store for Shadow’s new family. She’s a rockstar puppy and her way to being a rockstar adult. Shadow comes in tiny prancy, dancy package, and Miss Shadow is ready to prove it to you. Video refers to Shadow’s former name Miracle.
09/25/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR

Date of assessment 9/15/2017 Look: 1. Dog leans forward to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog gently places her open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Toy 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, walks away. Summary: Shadow was social during her handling assessment, with occasional typical puppy mouthing and wiggly body. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Miracle greets politely and engages in bouncy play with male and female dogs. She is polite when greeting dogs who are calmer. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Date of intake 9/24/2017 During intake, Shadow allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Date of initial 9/24/2017 During her initial medical exam, Shadow was alert and energetic, allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have limited information on shadow so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center, Shadow displays as a young, social, enthusiastic dog who will require daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend daily walks, runs, exercise, and play as well as long lasting chews such as kongs and nylabones to positively direct her puppy enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially in the behavior outlined below) Potential challenges: _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition – Miracle has shown some mouthiness in the care center. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors as this can frighten people. We recommend never playing with bare hands- always with a toy – and ending play or attention whenever Miracle puts teeth on skin. We only recommend force-free, reward based positive reinforcement training as more aversive techniques can make the challenge worse. _X_Strength/leash pulling – Previous owner reports Shadow pulls on leash. It is recommended that Shadow be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which helps diminish her strength through leverage, and that she be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash.
