WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: meet hunka hunka burnin’ love, Shadow!! I don’t know if I ever believed in “Love at first sight” until now. A jet black low rider, with a little white on his chest, Shadow is absolutely adorable. He sort of snorts and grunts when he walks and his smile is contagious. Shadow is playful and sweet, and appears to be housebroken. His former owner states that he’s friendly towards children, he loves to play fetch and tug, and not surprisingly, he followed his owner around the house…like a shadow! Shadow was quick to show me he knows the commands sit, down and give paw and even more eager to climb into my lap for loves and hugs. Shadow would do best in a home experienced with high energy dogs, and one who can provide all the love this hunk deserves. Ask to meet him today!
08/15/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Full profile 8/7/17 Neutered, Owner surrender (8 weeks in the previous home) Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward strangers: Friendly and outgoing Behavior toward children: Relaxed and affectionate Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: High energy level Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/15/17 Look: 1. Dog leans forward or jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity:1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag:5. Dog growls becomes tense and bites the leash. Toy: 4. Dog freezes and growls. Summary: Shadow appeared social though displayed a low threshold for arousal and became a bit difficult to handle when over-stimulated as he seemed to direct his energy onto the handler, which intensified as he became more aroused. He also displayed some concern when engaged with his toy item. PLAYGROUP: According to Shadow’s previous owner, Shadow was not socialized with other dogs. When off leash at the Care Center, Shadow displays erect ears, high vibrating tail and walks on his tip toes. He is sexually motivated- intensely sniffing the novel female dog’s genitals. He engages in cooperative play- with the intent to mount. He begins to grumble when the greeter repeatedly spins her rear from him. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 8/7/17: Unknown MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/7/17: During his medical examination, Shadow was active with wiggly body posture, he allowed all handling.
ENERGY LEVEL: His previous owner reports a high activity level, which matches what we have seen in the care center. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner: While Shadow’s previous owner describes an affectionate, playful dog, he is not thriving in the shelter environment and has had a difficult time directing his energy into appropriate outlets. He has generally given clear and protracted warnings and has not escalated to threatening behavior, but we are concerned that extra pressure may elicit higher level warnings. We feel that placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification guidance in a stable home environment will best set Shadow up for success in a future adoptive home. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods. Potential challenges: _X_Social hyper-arousal: Shadow has shown a tendency to escalate when overstimulated and to continue escalating and directing that energy and attention toward his handler. The precise stimulation/motivation for this behavior may be due to potential kennel deterioration though we cannot be certain, but Shadow will need guidance to learn how to deescalate more quickly and direct his energy in a more appropriate manner. _X_Anxiety: Shadow has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining and pacing) continually through the SAFER, unable to readily settle. This behavior was not reported at intake, and we have no known history on Shadow, so we cannot be certain whether similar behavior will be seen in a future home environment. _X_Leash-biting: At the care center Shadow has been observed to react on the leash during walks/handling. Shadow has fixated, jumped, and snapped at times at the leash which escalates towards the handler as he arouses. Shadow may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at the leash as a positive association with walks and other on-leash activities. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. _X_Resource guarding
