07/28/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Limited Profile Date of intake 7/22/2017 Unaltered male, owner surrender Bite history: Shadow bit owner’s hand when intervening while Shadow was in a heightened state and focused on someone else in the building’s hallway. SAFER ASSESSMENT: Date of assessment 7/28/2017 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted, body neutral, lip lick Sensitivity: 2. Dog leans in and accepts the touch, his eyes are soft, mouth closed, lip lick Tag: 3. Dog halts mid game with his tail high, ears forward, mouth closed-checks the Assessor at end of game. Approaches the assessor at end. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog pulls back paw quickly. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, displays brief bouts of enthusiasm, but quickly loses focus. Summary: Shadow showed discomfort during Tag. He gave appropriate warnings of discomfort and recovered quickly at end of item. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Date of initial 7/22/2017 Shadow was extremely tense during his medical exam, stressed. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Shadow so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, Shadow displays as having a medium level of energy.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_Place with a New Hope partner – Due to Shadow’s previous bite and behavior in the care center, we recommend that Shadow be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Shadow to acclimate comfortably to his new environment. Force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Shadow to new and unfamiliar situations. Potential challenges: _X_Social hyper-arousal – Shadow became uncomfortable quite suddenly mid tag game, stopped following on leash and body checking assessor at end of game. He recovered quickly but this should be noted as we cannot be certain whether similar beahvior will be seen in a future home environment. He would do best in a calm, quiet, structured home as Shadow appears to have a low threshold for arousal though recovered well once his appropriate warnings were adhered to. _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression – Shadow has been fearful at the care center, tail tucked for most of his time at the care center. Shadow gives clear warnings when he is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Shadow, preferably with treats, and to allow Shadow to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or to interact if he is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Once comfortable, he solicits attention from handlers, nuzzles for petting and takes treats gently.
