05/02/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 4/24/17 Neutered, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/2/17 Summary: Shadow is difficult to remove from the kennel, lunging, growling and snapping at people approached. When an attempt hads been made to leash him, he bites the leash. He has also allowed minimal handling from his caretakers and has not been able to be taken out of the kennel safely since he arrived. Out of concern for his stress levels and due to safety concerns, we feel Shadow is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Pending. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 4/24/17 During his initial medical exam, Shadow was tense and growling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Shadow so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Shadow currently, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Shadow has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Shadow has displayed growling, lunging, and snapping at people in the care center and has been unable to be safely removed from his kennel. Due to the consistent behavior displayed in shelter, the behavior department recommends an experienced adult home only until he can acclimate to his new home environment for the behavior to be further assessed. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is advised; force-free, reward based training only is recommended.
