02/24/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
02/24/17 18:30 Sergei A1104600 is a chocolate male short haired Chihuahua that was spotted walking along a street in the Bronx several minutes before being brought in. The finder felt bad for him and isn’t able to keep him so they thought it best for him to be brought in to us at the BXAC. The finder stated Sergei snapped at them (didn’t make contact) when they tried to untie him but once he was untied he wagged his tail and allowed the finder to walk him to us. During intake Sergei growled and bared his teeth at me but after spending a few minutes sweet talking him and petting him slowly while sitting on the floor with him Sergei allowed all handling. He allowed to be scanned (-), collared & taken pictures of. As we spent more time together Sergei appeared to enjoy being held as he was leaned against me and put his front paws on my hands when I tried to first place him into a kennel. He was placed into his kennel with ease where he remained in front and began barking as I walked away with his tail wagging pretty quickly.

02/26/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 2/24/17 Neutered, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 2/26/17 Summary: Sergei appeared social with people and initiates contact. He becomes very fearful when attempting to leash or collar him, ducking way from the collar and snapping at the handler in the process. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: 2/26: When introduced off leash to other dogs in the care center, Sergei offers defensive correction when approached. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:2/25/17 During his initial medical exam, Sergei was tense and allowed limited handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Sergei so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, he displays a medium to low level of activity. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No young children (under 5): Due to the behavior seen in the care center, we feel that Segei may be intimidated by young children. He needs a slow approach and time to warm up. He should never be forced to interact with new people, and should be allowed to greet and initiate an interaction at his own pace. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Sergei appears very afraid of the leash and collar, backing away from the leash and snapping when an attempt to leash him is made. He does appear to be human social, seeking out attention and petting from people. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Though observed to be human-social, Sergei may need time to warm up to the handler as he initially presents as a fearful dog, avoiding contact, shying away from direct touch. He is also very fearful of the leash and collar, snapping when an attempt is made to leash him. We recommend allowing Sergei to interact at his own pace, force-free, rewarding based training is advised when introducing him to new/unfamiliar situations.)

02/26/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
2/26: When introduced off leash to other dogs in the care center, Sergei offers defensive correction when approached. 2/27-28: Sergei avoids dogs and seeks handler attention.
