Sebastian
Hello, my name is Sebastian. My animal id is #12597. I am a male brown dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 14-Nov-2017.
Sebastian is at risk for behavior concerns (New Hope Only behavior determination). Sebastian has shown some escalated warning behaviors in the care center; for these reasons we advise against a home with children.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
This cool guy loves butt scratches and kisses. He becomes excited when we take him out, and shows his appreciations with snuggles. Sebastian will make a great pal for those who love to lounge around. If you want this cool guy come to Brooklyn Animal Care Centers of New York!

Summary (1):: Sebastian is calm around other dogs, exploring the area. He socially checks in with them, but is slightly sexually motivated. He was surrender as a stray so his past behavior with other dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Sebastian be placed in a home with resident dogs that match his calm sociability and will be tolerant of his sexually motivated behavior. All introductions should be done slowly and under supervision. 11/15: When off leash at the Care Center, Sebastian displays sexually motivated behavior with a female greeter. He is responds well to handler interruptions, and explores the area. When the other dog ignores him, he begins to whine. 11/16: Sebastian explores most of his session and was respectful with a nervous female dog. 11/17-20: Sebastian most keeps to himself in a group of playful dogs. He exchanges sniff with a smaller intact male but shows interest in the female dog.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Sebastian so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. Sebastian is a young, enthusiastic, social dog. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: Sebastian has shown some escalated warning behaviors in the care center; for these reasons we advise against a home with children. He otherwise shows good coping skills, even when uncomfortable, and has been quite human social with his caretakers in the care center.
Potential challenges: : Social hyperarousal
Potential challenges comments:: Social hyper arousal: Sebastian has displayed a low threshold for arousal, rapidly escalating and quickly tipping over to aggression (jumping, mouthing, low growling.) Immediate intervention and consultation with a qualified veterinary behaviorist/professional trainer is strongly recommended to aid in addressing this issue to prevent further behavioral concerns that may appear in the future if not treated right away. We recommend only force-free, reward based training when introducing or exposing Sebastian to new and unfamiliar situations.
