RTO SAFE 12/14/16

Brooklyn Center

My name is SCRAPPY. My Animal ID # is A1098053.
I am a male white and brown american staff mix. The shelter thinks I am about 2 YEARS old.

I came in the shelter as a OWNER SUR on 11/27/2016 from NY 11433, owner surrender reason stated was MOVE2PRIVA.

MOST RECENT MEDICAL INFORMATION AND WEIGHT
12/05/2016 Exam Type BEHAVIORPART2 – Medical Rating is 1 – NORMAL , Behavior Rating is EXPERIENCE, Weight 51.6 LBS.

PLAYGROUP: According to Scrappy’s previous owner, Scrappy hasn’t lived with any other dogs but not pay any attention to other dogs when on walks. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Scrappy displays loose and wiggly body language when interacting with calm male and female dogs. He is social, checking in on the other dogs often as he explores the pen. When dogs solicit play or come into contact with his body, Scrappy offers a soft correction. The Behavior Department recommends that Scrappy be placed in a home with dogs that match his calm sociability. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 11/28/16 During his initial medical exam Scrappy appeared very friendly and allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: High level of energy RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter only. (Scrappy has displayed extremely social behavior with both dogs and his human handlers however he has demonstrated that he has a very difficult time de-escalating when he is over-aroused in the shelter environment. This behavior may be unique to the shelter however the underlying emotional response that Scrappy has when stressed (leash-biting, jumping up, redirecting onto the handler) may appear in the home environment. Therefore we recommend Scrappy is placed with an experienced adopter who is able to manage these behaviors.) POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: _X_Leash-biting-(See In shelter behavior) _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control

12/02/2016 WEB MEMO
12/02/16 13:05 An employee writes: This short stocky dog seems he will be tough to handle but all he is a big butter ball. Scrappy is willing to love you the moment he meets you and he will give you the best wiggles and kisses a dog can ever offer. The best way into Scrappy’s heart is head and butt scratches. He loves toys and will play tug for hours. He previously lived with children and was gentle with them. Come into Brooklyn Care Center and adopted this butter ball!!

12/05/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Unaltered, Owner Surrender Previously lived with: Adults, children ages five and seven Behavior toward children: Relaxed and affectionate Behavior toward dogs: Ignores dogs outside Behavior toward cats: Will chase cats outside FG/RG: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Friendly, hyper, and excitable with a high activity level Other notes: Upon intake Scrappy had a wiggly body and was very excited. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 11/30/16 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy, and he is not stiff. No growling or stiffness. Summary: Scrappy displayed no behavioral concerns on his assessment. IN SHELTER BEHAVIOR: 12/5/16: While being removed from his kennel to go for a walk, Scrappy’s continued over-arousal (jumping up, biting at the leash and lunging towards the other dogs in kennel) resulted in him redirecting a Level 2 bite (no puncture, no broken skin) onto a Behavior staff’s leg as he was attempting to exit the room. 12/2/16:Scrappy has begun to display severe leash biting behavior with staff members. Due to this he has become difficult to remove from his kennel and poses a safety risk. The Behavior Department feels that this behavior is a direct result of the high level of arousal associated with being housed in the care center however this behavior may also appear in a home environment. Due to this deterioration we recommend that placement be sought as soon as possible for Scrappy’s well-being.
